Wildcats Cruise Past Vikings 6-1

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's tennis team picked up its first win of the early season on Friday in easy fashion, defeating Portland State 6-1 at the Ogden Athletic Club.
"I am very pleased with how our team played today," said WSU head coach Jonas Ehrlin. "We got a great performance from every spot in our lineup and it was a complete team effort today. We have several new players, many of whom are freshmen, and they all played very hard and very well today. This is a great way to open up the conference schedule."
The Wildcats jumped out early, winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the opening point. Naseem Eslami and Brittiny Moore clinched the point for Weber State with an 8-4 win over Yuki Sugiyama and Anya Dalkin in the No. 1 match. Kristi Russell and Nittaya Phonharath set up the point with an 8-2 win over Marina Todd and Masha Los in the No. 3 match.
In singles play, the Wildcats took the No. 2 through 6 matches all in straight sets. Moore downed Dalkin 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2, Karlsen took out Marti Pellicano 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, Michelle Warwick defeated Caitlin Stocking 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4, and Russell dispatched Nayantara Vadali 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5. Phonharath, a freshman from West Valley City, UT, made it a doubles/singles sweep in her first collegiate action as a Wildcat with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Todd in the No. 6 position.
Eslami rebounded from a 6-0 first set loss to push her match against Sugiyama to a third set with a 6-3 win in set two, but the Portland State No. 1 player took the match with a 10-1 tiebreaker margin.
Weber State moves to 1-2 on the season, while Portland State drops to 1-3 on the season. The Wildcats will be back on the courts on Wednesday, Feb. 9 as they face Idaho State in a non-conference match. The contest will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Ogden Athletic Club.
