Carl Arky named Utah Sportscaster of the Year

Weber State radio play-by-play announcer Carl Arky has been honored as the
2011 Utah Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and
Sportswriters Association.
Arky is in his 14th season as the radio voice for Weber State Athletics and
is veteran sportscaster in the state of Utah. He calls every regular season and
post season football and men's basketball game for the Wildcats.
Arky began his career at Weber State in 1998 when he worked as a member of
the WSU Athletic Department, serving as the Director of Broadcast Services for
five years, before moving on in September 2002 to become the afternoon sports
anchor at KFAN Sports Radio in Salt Lake City. He continued to broadcast WSU
football and men's basketball games for the Wildcats.
Before coming to Salt Lake City, he was the Sports Director at
KTVX-TV Channel 4 in Salt Lake City and served as the color analyst on the
televised games of the Salt Lake Bees AAA baseball team. He also served as the
television voice for Pro Rodeo on ESPN for four seasons.
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Arky graduated from the University of
Missouri School of Journalism in 1977. His first full-time position came in
1978 at KTUL-TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he served as a sportscaster and was
the producer/host of the Jimmy Johnson Oklahoma State Football Coaches Show.
Arky came to Utah in 1983 where he worked at KUTV-TV Channel 2 in Salt Lake
City.
In 1987, he left to become the Director of Broadcasting for the Utah Jazz. There he was responsible for the production and syndication of all Utah Jazz radio and television programming, and served as the color analyst on those broadcasts. After two seasons with the Jazz, Arky formed his own production company (C.A.P.) and broadcasted cable TV games of the Sacramento Kings, as well as the Western Athletic Conference Game of the Week, Air Force Blue-White Network and selected games for the University of Utah from 1989 through 1991.
Arky is married to Deborah Linder, they are the parents of two sons, Jake and Sam.
This season Arky can be heard broadcasting the Wildcats on 1280 KZNS The
Zone. He also hosts a weekly Wildcat coaches show on 1280 The Zone.
Arky and the rest of this year's winners will be honored at the 53rd Annual
NSSA Awards Banquet on June 11 in Salisbury, North Carolina. Bob Costas of
NBC Sports and the Major League Baseball Network and author and sportswriter
John Feinstein have been elected to the NSSA Hall of Fame. Dan Shulman of
ESPN has been named the National Sportscaster of the Year and Joe Posnanski of
Sports Illustrated has been named the National Sportswriter of the
Year.
