Wildcats fall in marathon at Northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Weber State University women's volleyball team put up a strong effort against one of the Big Sky's best, but couldn't quite close it out.
Sophomore outside hitter Audrey Biggs had a career high 15 kills for the Wildcats, who dropped a 27-29, 25-14, 21-25, 25-13, 15-4 decision to Northern Arizona on Thursday night at the Rolle Activity Center.
Redshirt freshman middle blocker Audrey Gee had seven blocks, along with five kills and a .400 attack percentage, as the Wildcats recorded a season-high 16.5 team blocks.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Rebecca Fuchs had nine kills, six digs and a career high-tying five blocks for Weber State, which fell to 2-9 in Big Sky play (8-14 overall).
Senior setter Caitlin Penrod had 35 assists, 11 digs and three blocks, while senior middle blocker Dama Cox had six kills and six blocks. Senior libero Laurel Bodily added 18 digs for the Wildcats.
Weber State got off to a strong start, battling through a first set that saw seven lead changes and 17 ties before eventually taking the set 29-27 and claiming a 1-0 advantage in the match.
Northern Arizona rallied decisively to level the match at 1-1 heading into the intermission.
The Wildcats and Lumberjacks again battled in the third set, with Weber State pulling out the four-point win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
NAU again leveled the match at 2-2 with a decisive fourth-set win to set up the fifth and final set, and then took advantage of nine attacking errors by the Wildcats in the final set to take the victory.
Weber State will return to action on Saturday against in-state rival Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah. First serve is set for 7 p.m. The Thunderbirds (4-7 Big Sky, 8-14 overall) are coming off a 3-1 loss to league-leading Idaho State on Thursday night.
