OGDEN - The Weber State football team held its first full scrimmage of the spring season Saturday on a sunny and windy day at Stewart Stadium. Both sides of the ball made strides in the nearly 200 play scrimmage.
The Wildcats used the scrimmage as a chance to run different plays and get different players on the field.
"I thought our defense performed very well today and I was pleased with their attitude," said new WSU head coach John L. Smith. "It was a nice scrimmage for us and we got a lot of snaps in. We still have a lot to do and a lot to learn and need to have some players step up as leaders."
With senior Mike Hoke sitting out spring practice after shoulder surgery, the other Wildcat quarterbacks got a chance to compete. Junior Jordan Adamczyk took the majority of the snaps with the first string offense. Adamczyk finished 30-46 for 322 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns.
The other quarterback that saw significant action Saturday was Breck Lewis, a freshman from Spanish Fork. Lewis was 8-14 for 94 yards on the day and also rushed for more than 60 yards.
Shaydon Kehano led the receiving corps, finishing with nine catches for 146 yards receiving, including a 70-yard touchdown catch from Adamczyk. Senior Lanny Papanikolas, a Salt Lake City native, also had a big receiving day, finishing with seven catches for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Xavian Johnson, C.J. Tuckett, and Chase Nakamura also had multiple receptions.
On the ground the Wildcats had more strong performances from Josh Booker and C.J. Tuckett. Booker had 15 carries for 78 yards and Tuckett rushed the ball 15 times for 51 carries.
The WSU defense was especially strong Saturday as the Wildcats had multiple sacks and tackles for loss. Trevor Pletcher, Jeff Gueck, and Chris Wheeler all had multiple sacks on the day. Tony Epperson recorded an interception.
The Wildcats will continue spring practice with three more practices scheduled next week and another scrimmage set for next Saturday. Spring practice will conclude with the annual spring game on at 6:00 p.m. on April 14.
