Weber State women's track and field standout Sarah Callister captured a gold medal representing the United States over the weekend at the 2012 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U-23 Championships in Guanajuato, Mexico.
Callister won the title in the women's 10,000 meter race, posting a time of 35:46.12 to win the event by more than 20 seconds in a race that was run under extremely windy conditions. She was one of 23 gold medals captured by the United States at the meet, which is held every two years in one of the 32 member nations of the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association - one of six regional athletics associations affiliated with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
Callister, a native of Ogden and graduate of Ogden High School, had an incredible year as a member of the Weber State women's cross country and track and field teams. In the past year she won four Big Sky Conference titles in indoor and outdoor track. At the 2012 indoor track championships she won the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters and was second in the mile in helping Weber State win the conference title. For her performance she was named the Female Athlete of the Meet. In outdoor track she won the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters at the conference meet for the third consecutive season, becoming the first athlete in conference history to win both events in three straight years. She qualified for the NCAA First Round Championship in the 10,000 meters and just missed advancing to the NCAA Championships.
She also set a Weber State and Big Sky record in the 10,000 meters in outdoor track and posted five times on the school's all-time top 10 list.
Last fall in cross country she earned All-Conference honors by finishing fifth at the Big Sky Championships, helping Weber State win the conference title.
She won Capital One Academic All-American honors for the second-straight season, carrying a 4.00 G.P.A in Nursing at Weber State. She will be a senior for the Wildcats this fall.
