Wildcat volleyball falls to Wolverines

OREM, Utah - The Weber State University women's volleyball team came up short on Tuesday night against in-state rival Utah Valley.
Junior Briana Wilms led the Wildcats with nine kills, but Weber State fell in straight sets, 25-20, 25-12, 25-17 to the Wolverines at Utah Valley University's PE Building.
Wilms had nine kills and hit .412, while sophomore Audrey Biggs added seven kills and redshirt freshman Rebecca Fuchs had seven kills.
Senior setter Caitlin Penrod finished with 25 assists and four digs.
The Wildcats (2-5) had 29 more attacks than the Wolverines, but committed 26 attack errors and hit just .063 on the night. Weber State struggled to block Utah Valley's hitters as the finished with a season-low two blocks. Utah Valley committed just nine attack errors, hitting .364 for the match, and had nine blocks.
Utah Valley (2-3) was led by McKenna Tait's 12 kills, while Erica Nish - the daughter of former Weber State men's basketball star Martin Nish - had eight kills and four blocks.
The Wildcats and Wolverines battled back and forth in the first set, with Weber State edging ahead 20-19 on a Wilms' ace, but Tait had two kills as Utah Valley scored the final six points of the set to take a 1-0 advantage.
UVU opened up an early lead in the second set and WSU wasn't able to recover as the Wolverines opening up a 2-0 lead in the match.
Weber State stormed out to a 4-0 lead early in the third set and still let 12-10 before Utah Valley scored the next five points to take a 15-12 lead. WSU closed within 18-17 on a kill by Biggs, but UVU finished out the match by scoring the final six points of the night.
Weber State will return to action on Friday and Saturday in Hammond, La., as part of the Southeastern Lion Classic. The Wildcats will face Southern, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana Tech and University of Texas-Pan American in the two-day, five-team tournament.
