Wildcat volleyball falls to Eagles in 2013 finale

OGDEN, Utah – The Wildcats went out swinging, but couldn't get the breakthrough they wanted on Senior Day.
After honoring its three seniors, including two who have been unable to play this season due to injury, the Weber State University women's volleyball team went to work in trying to capture a win in its season finale.
Despite a hard-fought and inspired effort, the Wildcats fell 27-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-15 to Eastern Washington on Saturday night at Swenson Gym.
Weber State finishes its 2013 campaign with a 3-17 mark in Big Sky play, 7-27 overall, while the Eagles wrapped up their season at 7-13 in league and 10-21 overall.
Senior outside hitter Shanae Burgin finished her final match for the Purple and White with eight kills, hitting .400, while adding three blocks and three digs. Senior outside hitter/libero Piper Wahlin and senior middle blocker/outside hitter Briana Wilms were also honored for their respective careers.
Junior outside hitter Audrey Biggs had 12 kills, hitting .267, to lead Weber State. Biggs also added five digs, two blocks and two service aces.
Sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Fuchs had nine kills, five digs and three service aces, while freshman middle blocker Megan Bean had eight kills.
Sophomore setter/outside hitter Samantha Staker had 40 assists, while junior libero McKay Tarbox had 17 digs for the Wildcats.
Weber State appeared ready to seize control of the match, controlling the tempo of the opening set. The Wildcats trailed only once in that opening set – at 19-18 – and held set point at 24-22 and 25-24, but the Eagles swung the momentum with a dramatic rally by scoring the final three points to take the 27-25 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Weber State again held a late lead, 21-19, in the second set, but once again the Eagles rallied and edged ahead to take the 25-22 and a commanding 2-0 advantage.
After the break, the Wildcats and Eagles battled through the third set until a 4-0 Weber State surge, fueled by a trio of strong serves from sophomore setter Whitney Hunt, put WSU in front 23-17 and the Wildcats closed it out to make it 2-1.
After keeping things close early in the fourth set, the Eagles broke free and surged out to an insurmountable lead before closing it out by 10 to wrap up both teams season.
