OGDEN – Weber State dropped its home opener 77-71 to instate rival Utah State Tuesday night at the Dee Events Center.

The Aggies jumped out to an early 14-5 lead but the Wildcats bounced back with an 11-2 run midway through the half and took their first lead at 27-25 with 6:00 to play. The 'Cats held a 33-31 lead at halftime.

WSU led by five points three minutes into the half but a 14-8 Utah State run over the next six minutes gave the Aggies a one point lead midway through the half and they would never trail again. The Aggies shot 63 percent from the field in the second half.

“That is a really good basketball team that we played tonight and their experience showed,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “We got after them and we played hard and challenged them but they stayed composed. I was really proud of how we played and how we fought. We showed a lot of toughness and grit and that has to be the strength of our team.”

Both teams shot 50 percent from the field for the game. USU outrebounded the Wildcats 33-29 and the Aggies committed just seven turnovers. Utah State shot 7 percent from the free throw line, while the Wildcats shot 61 percent.

WSU was led by senior Davion Berry who finished with 21 points on 6-11 shooting. Freshman Jeremy Senglin added 14 points for the third straight game, to go along with four rebounds. Senior Kyle Tresnak had 10 points and four rebounds. Joel Bolomboy had four points and eight rebounds and freshman Kyndahl Hill had five points and eight rebounds.

The loss drops the 'Cats to 0-3 on the young season. Utah State improved to 5-0 on the year.

The Wildcats will host another Mountain West Conference team Saturday when San Jose State comes to the Dee Events Center at 7 p.m.
