The Weber State women's basketball team fell just shy of upsetting in-state foe BYU, with the Cougars coming back for a 90-85 win on Tuesday night at the Dee Events Center.
The Wildcats were ahead by as many as 24 points in the second half before BYU made a late run. A Xojian Harry three-pointer with under ten seconds left broke an 85-85 tie and two late free throws put the game away.
The Cougars finished the game on a 14-0 run over the last three minutes.
BYU moves to 9-0 with the win while the Wildcats fall to 4-4 with the loss.
Weber State had five players in double-digits, led by sophomore center Jalen Carpenter who poured in 20 points. Senior guard Laura Palmere scored 15 points, going 4-for-6 from three-point range. Senior forward Amanda Hughes and sophomore guard Dezz Ramos finished with 12 points, while sophomore forward Regina Okoye added 11.
The Cats led by 18 at halftime behind 20 points off 13 first-half BYU turnovers. The Wildcats didn't yield one point off turnovers largely because they only turned it over one time in the first half.
Weber State turned it over eight times in the second half leading to 16 Cougar points.
With a huge size advantage the Cougars only outrebounded the Wildcats, 37-35. They were led by leading scorer Jennifer Hamson in that regard who pulled down 11 rebounds. The 6-foot-7 Hamson blocked nine Weber State shots. Hughes led the way for the Cats on the boards with nine.
Weber State outrebounded BYU 21-9 on the offensive glass. Thanks to the large margin in offensive rebounds, the Cats outscored BYU on second chance points, 24-11.
Lexi Eaton led the Cougars with 25 points in the game, with Hamson right behind her with 23.
The Wildcats' bench also outscored BYU's, 28-18. The BYU size advantage led to the Cougars' winning the battle down low, scoring 32 points in the paint to the Wildcats' 26.
Weber State will take almost two weeks off before traveling to Colorado State for a matchup with the Rams on Sunday, December 22. The Cats will begin conference play after the Colorado State matchup and won't return home until January 9 when they host Northern Colorado.
