Track and Field Hosts Wildcat Indoor Invitational

2/13/2013 11:24:00 PM | Women's Track & Field

Weber State's indoor track teams conclude their 2013 regular season this coming Thursday (Feb. 14) and Saturday (Feb.16), hosting the Wildcat Indoor Invitational.

On Thursday, the indoor shot put and weight throw for both men and women will take place at the Weber County Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Then on Saturday, the field events will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the track events starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Stromberg Complex inside the Swenson Gym.

Utah, BYU, Utah Valley, Westminster, Utah State and Idaho State are expected to send some athletes to the event as well.

WSU WOMEN

Coach Jim Blaisdell's women now have 14 total qualifiers in 23 events. In addition to having those 14 qualifiers, athletes can now qualify for the conference meet by being in the top 16 in any event. The Wildcats have a few athletes who currently qualify that way. So the women's team is allowed to take 22 athletes to the conference meet next week and with the addition of the top-16 qualifiers, the team has filled 21 of those 22 spots.

Coach Blaisdell is pleased with the way his team is preparing for the Big Sky Conference meet in two weeks and thinks this week's home meet will help them continue to do so.

"We have a few nicks and bruises just from running inside so we'll have some girls resting this week," Blaisdell said. "It's always nice to be at home and participate home and we are looking forward to this weekend. Conference is almost on us, so this is an exciting time of year."

Last weekend in Seattle, Sarah Callister almost broke the school record in the 5,000 meters. Callister was just .18 off the pace of current Weber State assistant coach Lindsey Anderson. Anderson took both Callister and Taylor Thornley to Seattle for the University of Washington meet.

WSU MEN

The Wildcat men are coming off of another week with strong improvements. They now have 11 qualifiers in 14 different events.

Head coach Dan Walker is excited for the opportunity to compete at home and the chance to record some more qualifiers for the conference meet next weekend.

"We got better last weekend and that's always the goal in every meet leading up to the conference meet," Walker said. "We had several guys that improved their marks and several who set qualifying marks. The goal this weekend is to stay healthy and continue to get ready for the conference meet. This meet is a little odd because we'll have some people taking the meet off so they can be ready for the conference championship. We also have several athletes competing in their secondary events because they've already qualified for the conference meet."

The Wildcats had one new qualifier last week in Bozeman. Mike Hardy qualified for his second event, running the mile in 4:08.29.

The meet this weekend is open to the public and admission is free.
