OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State women's volleyball team kicked off homecoming weekend against one of the best teams in the Big Sky on Friday night, North Dakota. The Wildcats fell behind early and were unable to recover as they lost in three sets, 25-11, 25-10, 25-17.
The loss drops the Wildcats record to 4-14, 1-4 in Big Sky conference play.
The Wildcats had a hard time finding any open spots in the North Dakota side of the court. That made it tough for Audrey Biggs or Amanda Varley to find a rhythm. The Wildcats were unable to dig themselves out of the hole that they put themselves in both of the first two sets. The combination of Anna Pioske, Faith Dooey, and Felicia Ulrich kept the Wildcats guessing all night.
The Wildcats finally took their first lead of the match in the third set and after a few kills from Biggs, the Wildcats seemed poised to extend the match to four sets. With the set at 17-13, North Dakota used four straight points to put the match out of reach.
“That team played flawlessly and were tougher than we thought they would be,” WSU head coach Tom Peterson. “They are a really athletic team and just kept the ball alive so many different times. They frustrated us into a lot of errors that we shouldn't have been making. But I am really happy with how the team responded in the third set.”
Biggs lead the Wildcats with 12 kills on 34 attempts, while Varley had 4 kills. Taylor Christensen was held to a season-low 18 assists. McKay Tarbox had a team-high 10 digs and Thamires Cavalcanti had 6 digs of her own.
The Wildcats will now host Northern Colorado on Saturday. The first serve is set for 7 p.m. at Swenson Gym. A live stream of the match will be available at BigSkyTV and the Watch Big Sky app.
