LUBBOCK, Texas – A night removed from an emotional five-set loss to Texas Tech, the Weber State women's volleyball returned the court to take on Abilene Christian. It was the first meetings between the two schools as ACU walked away the victor in three sets, 25-22, 29-27, 27-25.
The loss drops the Wildcats record to 3-10, and 1-2 at the Lone Star Showdown.
In the loss, the Wildcats had a hard time getting into any sort of rhythm as the team only hit .132. The team also combined for 10 service errors compared to five service aces.
Senior outside hitter Audrey Biggs was held to a season-low 12 kills, while freshman outside hitter Amanda Varley added 9 kills and 5 blocks. Redshirt freshman Taylor Christensen had 31 assists and 8 digs.
Senior libero McKay Tarbox had a team-high 11 digs but received some help on the defensive end from two freshmen. Jesse Hover and Thamires Cavalcanti added 8 and 7 digs respectively.
In the first set, the Wildcats held a two-point advantage for most of the match. But with the match tied at 22, ACU turned to Stephanie Schoelman who ended the set with two straight kills.
The second set consisted of 8 lead changes as both teams struggled to distance one from another. ACU had a hard time putting the Wildcats away until the fifth time they served for the set.
The third set started off slow for the Wildcats as they fell behind 6-1. But they fought themselves back into the set until they tied it at 18. They scored five of the next seven points and seemed poised to extend the match. But once again, ACU found a way to get slip past the Wildcats.
“As a whole group, we just didn't do what we need to do to prepare mentally,” WSU head coach Tom Peterson said. “We weren't mentally ready to play any team. After an emotional match last night, we just didn't prepare for this match. We can do a lot of great things but also dumb things as well. We just have to be that team that does great things all the time.”
The Wildcats will open their Big Sky conference campaign as they take on the University of Montana on Thursday, September 25th. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
