CEDARY CITY, Utah – Southern Utah beat Weber State for the first time in more than eight years as the Thunderbirds picked up a 70-60 win over the Wildcats Saturday night at the Centrum.

The loss ends Weber State's three-game Big Sky winning streak and drops the Wildcats to 8-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

SUU shot 54 percent from the field while the Wildcats shot just 34 percent. WSU was also 3 of 15 from 3-point land and shot just 28 percent in the second half. WSU outrebounded SUU 31-30 but gave up 30 Thunderbirds points in the paint.

Southern Utah held a 36-33 lead at halftime as the Thunderbirds shot 62 percent from the field and held Weber State to 39 percent shooting.

The game was tied 46-46 early in the second half when Southern Utah exploded for a 14-0 run and held the Wildcats scoreless over a six minute span. SUU took a 60-46 lead with 7:11 to play and the Wildcats never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

“We got beat and out played tonight by Southern Utah and we didn't match their intensity and edge,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “You have to give Southern Utah all the credit. We weren't able to get stops and we didn't have the toughness that we needed.”

Richaud Gittens led Weber State with 18 points on 6 of 7 shooting. Jeremy Senglin added 14 points with 12 of those points coming from the free throw line. He also had six rebounds and two assists. Kyndahl Hill had 12 points and eight rebounds and Joel Bolomboy had eight points and six rebounds. The 'Cats had just four points off the bench, compared to 33 for Southern Utah.

The loss snaps Weber State's nine-game winning streak against Southern Utah and gives the Thunderbirds their first win over the Wildcat since December 2006.

Weber State returns home for two more Big Sky Conference games next week hosting Portland State Thursday and Sacramento State Saturday.
