WSU's efforts fall short, fall to Idaho 1-3

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State's efforts fell short on Thursday night as they fell to University of Idaho in four sets with scores of 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 21-25.

"I'm proud of the way we worked tonight," head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. "I've been begging these girls for the last two weeks to start working hard and tonight they showed up but at the same time we lost."

Weber State started the first set battling. Idaho jumped to an early 9-5 lead but the Wildcats answered with a 6-1 run claiming the lead at 11-10. The Wildcats maintained that lead until the score was tied at 17-17 when the Vandals took advantage of a Wildcat attack error reclaiming the lead. Idaho went on a 7-4 run to end the set with a 25-21 score. There were seven tied scores in the first set with four different lead changes. Weber State and Idaho each had 11 kills in the first set but Idaho only had three errors to WSU's 11.  

The second set started with neck and neck scores until WSU took a three point lead at 14-11. The Vandals continued to pressure the Wildcats and brought the score to 21-19 but the Wildcats surged to the set two victory with a 25-22. The teams were tied at one set each going into the half time break.

The Wildcats trailed the whole third set. The closest the wildcats got in the third set was within two points. Idaho pushed all the way through to claim the set victory with the score of 25-18.

The game was tied 7-7 in the fourth set, Weber trailed 14-20 but attempted comeback and brought the score to 20-23. The Wildcats were short in the end with a 21-25 final score to the Vandals. The fourth set proved to be WSU's best set for hitting with 34 attacks and 17 kills for a .324 percentage.

 Megan Thompson and Andrea Hale both had game highs with 13 kills each. Ciera Borho added eight for the Wildcats. Taylor Christensen-Kinikini had 45 assists. Thamires Cavalcanti led the team with 16 digs while Jesse Hover added seven.

Weber State had 14 team blocks to Idaho's 11. Idaho ended the night with 20 attack errors to WSU's 33. The Wildcats accumulated 53 kills to the Vandals 51.

"I'm happy with our effort and focus," Larsen said. "This is what we've been trying to do for a while and it's nice when it actually shows."

The Wildcats are now 5-15 on the season and 1-8 in the Big Sky Conference. They will next take on Eastern Washington Saturday night at the Swenson Gym before taking on in-state rival Utah Valley Monday night.
