WSU struggles to maintain a lead, falls 3-0 to EWU

OGDEN, Utah – After three sets and three strong starts, the Weber State University volleyball team couldn't hold onto leads and fell in three sets to Eastern Washington University.

"We need to stop letting things get in the way of our goals of working hard and start being dedicated to winning," said head coach Jeremiah Larsen. "Until we learn to do that we will not make any progress towards consistency."

Weber State started the first match with a 7-5 lead over the Eagles. EWU wasn't going to remain behind for long as they came back with a 12-4 run taking a 6 point lead at 17-11. The set ended with a final score of 25-13 for Eastern Washington. Megan Thompson had three kills and five attacks in the first set.

The second set started very similar to the first. Weber State started out with a 9-6 lead. The Eagles made a surge to tie the match but a kill by Audrey Hunter kept the momentum of the game in favor of the Wildcats. Eastern Washington claimed the lead for the first time in the set with a kill Alexis Wesley with a score of 17-16. The next play was a service error by the Eagles which tied the score back up. Jesse Hover then came up with a clutch ace to give the Wildcats the lead once again. Eastern Washington surged to the finish and never gave the Wildcats a chance to score again to finish the set with a score of 25-20.

Unlike the first two sets, EWU jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. The Wildcats went on an 8-3 run and tied the score at 9-9. With intense back and forth action the Eagles maintained a two point lead three kills by Wesley gave them a 21-16 lead over the Wildcats. Weber State couldn't finish the third set which gave EWU the 25-18 set and the match.  The third set proved to be the best for the Wildcats with 11 kills and 31 attacks for a .226 percentage.

Weber State had three Wildcats with five kills each, Ciera Borho, Amanda Varley and Thompson. Hunter had the percentage high on the night with .800 and no errors.

Both teams had seven team blocks but Eastern Washington had only 13 errors to the Wildcats 17.

Weber Sstate is now 5-15 on the season and 1-9 in Big Sky Conference play. The Wildcats will host in-state rival Utah Valley University in a non-conference match before hosting Southern Utah and Northern Arizona Oct. 29 and 31.
