OGDEN, Utah – Weber State fought a hard battle but fell in three sets to in-state rival Utah Valley on Monday night.
"The reason that we lost is because we try to do to much," head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. "We think we need to be more than who we are. When you try to be more perfect at crucial times that's when you become undisciplined and make mistakes."
Weber State came out hot in the first set claiming a 9-6 lead and maintained that lead until the Wolverines went on an 8-3 run tying the game at 16-16. WSU matched every Utah Valley point until the Wolverines scored three unanswered points giving them a 23-20 lead that drove UVU to a 25-21 finish.
Weber State had two team blocks in the first set and hit its best with a .467 percentage with no attack errors. Amanda Varley led the first set with four kills.
The second set proved to have a more challenging start for the Wildcats as they dropped to a 14-7 lead. WSU scored five unanswered points to bring the score within two point. Back to back kills by UVU's Lauren Bakker kept the game in the Wolverine's favor. Despite valiant Wildcat efforts that prevented game point on three separate plays, the Wildcats fell in the second set 25-22.
Weber State ended the second set with a .365 hitting percentage and added three blocks to its team total.
The Wildcats came from behind early in the third set to claim an 11-9 lead. WSU maintained a two point lead for the majority of the third set. With the third game on the line UVU's Abby Jensen had a kill and a pair of attack errors held off the ending and tied the set at 24-24. UVU's Madison Dennison had a kill but was immediately answered by a block from Audrey Hunter. The battle continued to rage as the scores remained tied or within one point until a kill from UVU's Lexi Thompson and a Wildcat error led gave UVU the 29-27 victory and the entire match.
The Wildcats had 18 kills in the third set the most of any set on the night.
Weber State was led by Ciera Borho and Megan Thompson who each had 12 kills. This was Thompson's fourth match hitting in double figures and Borho's seventh. Hunter again led the Wildcats in percentage with a .714 on the night. The Wildcats had six team blocks to UVU's four. Taylor Christensen-Kinikini had 37 assists on the night and Jesse Hover and Thamires Cavalcanti had 10 digs each.
Weber State drops to 5-17 overall on the season. The Wildcats will stay at home for a pair of conference matches against Southern Utah and Northern Arizona before heading on it's final road trip of the season.
