Southern Utah rolls past Wildcats 44-0

OGDEN -- Southern Utah forced six Weber State turnovers and the Thunderbirds rolled to a 44-0 win over the Wildcats Friday night at Stewart Stadium.
The Wildcats threw five interceptions and had one fumble and SUU had 24 points off turnovers in route to the win, their third straight win in Ogden. The Thunderbirds had 357 yards of total offense, compared to 259 for the Wildcats.
SUU started the scoring with a 64-yard punt return for a touchdown by Naia Ursua in the first quarter. In the second quarter LeShaun Sims had a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown and the Thunderbirds added a 33-yard field goal at the end of the half to take a 17-0 lead at the break.
Southern Utah had touchdown runs by Mike Sharp and Jarom Healey in the third quarter to lead 31-0 after three quarters. Taylor Nelson returned another Wildcat interception 19-yards for a touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter before two more field goals made it 44-0.
“Obviously you have to give Southern Utah credit for playing a terrific game,” said WSU head coach Jay Hill. “We had way too many mistakes and penalties that cost us, especially offensively. This game won't define us but we have to bounce back for with a tough game next week.”
Individually, Eric Wilkes had 20 carries for 59 yards rushing to lead the Wildcat ground attack. Treshawn Garrett had five carries for 35 yards and Emmanuel Pooler had four carries for 22 yards.
Jadrian Clark finished the day 12-of-30 passing for 134 yards with two interceptions. Freshman Justin Shaw threw three interceptions for the 'Cats. Tui Satuala led the receivers with four catches for 54 yards and Drew Batchelor had three catches for 43 yards.
Defensively, the Wildcats recorded a season-high 13 tackles for loss and had two sacks. Sophomore Emmett Tela led the Wildcat with 10 tackles, including three tackles for loss. Tre'von Johnson had eight tackles.
Weber State returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 10 at nationally ranked Montana.
