'Cats fall in four sets to Bengals on senior night

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State volleyball fell in four sets to Idaho State in the last match of the season.
"All year we've talked about what it really means to care and lay our hearts on the floor," head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. "The last two matches I feel like we were able to consistently do that."
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 7-5 lead in the first set. Idaho State remained right with the Wildcats and went on a 10-1 run to take a 16-12 lead. The Wildcats fought back and brought the score within two points as it came down to the wire. A service ace by Ciera Borho and a kill by Audrey Hunter tied the score at 23-23. The Bengals went on to claim the set 27-25. There were seven tied scores and four lead changes in the first set. Weber State hit a .222 percentage to ISU's .308.
Idaho State got a 10-5 jump on the Wildcats in the second set. The Bengals advanced their lead to ten points with a score of 20-10. ISU went on to claim the second set 25-13. Weber State trailed Idaho State two sets to none going into the third set.
At the beginning of the third set the Wildcats jumped out to an 8-6 lead over the Bengals. WSU increased their lead to 14-10 by two big kills by Amanda Varley and a service ace by Tanisha Langston. Weber State kept the momentum in their favor and maintained at least a four point lead for most of the third set.
Varley had three big kills and Langston added one to drive the Wildcats to set point. ISU evaded the set's ending and brought the score within three before Varley finished the set with a kill. Final score of the third set was 25-21.
Weber State had a 10-8 lead over Idaho State to start the fourth set. A block and a kill by Megan Thompson kept the momentum in favor of the Wildcats. Idaho State tied the match at 11-11 before the Wildcats maintained the lead by a kill by Varley.
ISU's Makenzie Filer had consecutive kills to give the Bengals a two point lead for the first time in the set. The Bengals kept pushing and finished the fourth set off with a kill to claim the set 25-22 and the match three sets to one.
Varley led the Wildcats with 10 kills and 31 attacks on the night. Andrea Hale was close behind with nine. Thamires Cavalcanti had 21 digs on the night. Thompson had seven blocks including three solo blocks while Hunter added four.
Both teams had 11 team blocks. Idaho State had 30 attack errors to the Wildcats 20.
"I think the people that came tonight got a glimpse of where we are going as a program," Larsen said. Â "We can truly compete with some of the best teams in our conference."
Weber State finished the season with a 6-22 record and finished 2-14 Big Sky Conference record.Â
