Wildcats fall 65-56 to Southern Utah

OGDEN, Utah -- Southern Utah knocked off Weber State 65-56 Thursday night at the Dee Events Center to pick up a season sweep of the Wildcats. The loss dropped the WSU to 10-13 overall and 5-7 in Big Sky play.
Weber State shot just 27 percent from the field compared to 49 percent shooting for Southern Utah, including 57 percent shooting in the second half by the Thunderbirds. The Wildcats were 5-of-26 from 3-point range.
Southern Utah jumped out to an early 12-1 lead in the first 3:30 of the game. Weber State responded with a 13-0 run as Southern Utah did not score for nearly seven minutes. The Wildcats led 28-25 with 2:50 to play when SUU closed the half on a 5-0 run and took a 30-28 lead at halftime.
The Thunderbirds opened the second half on a 9-2 run and never trailed again. SUU built its largest lead of 12 points at 51-39 with 7:30 to play. The Wildcats never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
“We weren't ready to play to start the game tonight and it cost us,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “We came out flat and didn't have the aggressiveness or toughness that we needed. When we don't have those intangibles at a high level we have a hard time. We have to keep fighting and try to find a way.”
Richaud Gittens had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Wildcats. Chris Golden also added 13 points to go along with three steals and two assists. Senior James Hajek had nine points and seven rebounds off the bench. Joel Bolomboy finished with two points and 10 rebounds.
The Wildcats had 14 turnovers on the night and were outrebouned 40-36.
Weber State currently sits in a tie for seventh in the Big Sky standings. The Wildcats will be back home Saturday night at 7 p.m. to host Northern Arizona.
