WSU falls 64-62 to EWU in OT thriller

Weber State's women's basketball lost 64-62 in an overtime thriller to Eastern Washington Saturday afternoon.

"That was a heartbreaking game," head coach Bethann Ord said. "The girls battled and did a great job.  It sucks we came up short. When it came down to the overtime we didn't put our heads down and we just kept battling."

Weber State started the game out strong going on an early 13-5 run. With 6:21 left in the first half Eastern Washington brought the score within one point. The Wildcats ended the half with a 31-26 lead over the Eagles.

During the second half there was six different lead changes and the score was tied five different times. The Wildcats had a 58-56 lead with 30 seconds left when Eastern Washington's Delany Hodgins made a layup to tie the game and send it into overtime.

The Eagles started overtime going on a 4-1 run. The Wildcats tied the game with 32 seconds on the clock but a deep jumper by Hayley Hodgins gave Eastern Washington the 64-62 victory over Weber State.  

"We did a really good job to start the game. We had good energy," Ord said. "We didn't take care of the basketball and gave them too many opportunities."

Weber State had three players in double figures. Jalen Carpenter led the Wildcats with 14 points. Carlee Lough had 12 points. Regina Okoye led the team with a game high of eight rebounds and had 13 points.

"We fought hard and we played hard for the seniors," Carpenter said. "People stepped up when they needed to unfortunately we came up short but we put up a good effort." 

Weber State shot 39.6 percent from the field, 20 percent from beyond the arc and 63 percent from the free throw line. Weber State out rebounded Eastern Washington 47-30. Weber State had 28 turnovers to Eastern Washington's 14.

The Eagles also had three players in double figures Hayley Hodgins led Eastern Washington with 18 points. Delaney Hodgins had 15 points and Melissa Williams had a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Eagles shot 35 percent from the field, 38 percent from the three and 77 percent from the free throw line.

"We talked about how much it hurt not being able to go to the tournament but we're going to start working and get us tough for next year." Ord said. "We got our leading scorers coming back and got some good freshman coming up and we're going to be ready. We're going to take the hurt we feel and use it as fuel for next year." 

The Wildcats ended the season with an 11-18 overall record and went 6-12 in the Big Sky Conference.

"It's a learning lesson for next season and we will get ready to get to work in the off season," Carpenter said.
