Wildcats hit the road for pair of conference games

Wildcats headed to New Mexico for WBI Tournament

Weber State women's basketball has been invited to the 2016 Women's Basketball Invitational tournament and will take on the Lobos of University of New Mexico, Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Center. 

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our players, program and the Wildcat family," head coach Bethann Ord said. "It is a great reward for all the hard work this team has put into this season. It's another step in building a winning culture for our program. I am ecstatic to go into battle with this group of players and staff."

Weber State finished with a 20-11 overall record on the year. The best season since 2004-05 where the Wildcats finishd with a 21-8 record. This is the second time ever in school history that Weber State has competed in a post season tournament besides the NCAA Championships. The first time was in 1982-83 when WSU went to Amarillio, Texas for the Women's NIT. 

The Wildcats finished the regular season at sixth in the conference and defeated Portland State 91-68 in the first round. Weber State suffered an 86-83 pvertime loss to Idaho by a last second buzzer beater in the quarterfinal round. The Vandals went on to win the Big Sky Tournament. 

The Wildcats are coached by Bethann Ord who is in her fifth season as head coach. Ord was hired as the Weber State head coach in 2011 and brought 21 years of coaching experience with her. 

Weber State senior Brittney Dunbar was named the Big Sky Defensive player of the year. She is in the top 10 in the country in steals averaging just over three per game. She also leads the team in assists with 94 on the year. 

The WBI provides a choise for postseason worthy Division I women's teams who wish to conintue their season but who do not qualify for the NCAA tournament. The 16 team event will take place over two weeks with all games being played on campus sites. 

Weber State is one of two Big Sky Conference teams in the WBI, the other is North Dakota and they will host Grand Canyon.
UNM of the Mountain West Conference brings a 17-14 record into its second WBI appearance while the Wildcats make their WBI debut with a 20-11 mark.
This will be the 11th meeting between the two schools. Weber State is 2-8 against the Lobos with the last match up in 2012. The Wildcats are 2-8 when taking on the Lobos and 0-7 in Albuquerque. 

The winner of Wednesday's game will play the winner of UND and Grand Canyone on either March 19th or 20th.
