Weber State defeats Portland State in first round of Big Sky Tournament

The Wildcats will now face No. 1 Idaho tomorrow at 12 p.m.
BOISE, Idaho - Weber State women's basketball defeated the No. 10 Portland State Vikings 76-53 in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament. With the win, the Wildcats will now face No. 1 Idaho tomorrow at noon.Â
The game began with the Wildcats establishing an early lead as Hannah Robbins scored twice, contributing to a 4-0 start. The Vikings responded with a three-pointer, but the Wildcats continued to extend their lead. Antoniette Emma-Nnopu was active, scoring from the free-throw line and completing a layup to push the Wildcats ahead 11-4. Fui Niumeitolu closed the first quarter with a three-pointer, solidifying a 19-5 advantage for the Wildcats. Weber State's defense held the Vikings to just 1-of-13 shooting from the field, maintaining control throughout the quarter.
Robbins led a strong second quarter for the Wildcats, contributing both inside and beyond the arc with a layup and two three-pointers. Sydney White supported the effort, opening the quarter with an early jumper and closing it with another just before the buzzer. The Vikings Chicken kept the visitors competitive, but the 'Cats solid defense allowed them to extend the lead to 43-20 by the quarter's end.Â
In the third quarter, the Vikings managed to narrow the Wildcats lead, scoring 15 points to the Wildcats 13. However, Robbins contributed significantly throughout the quarter with multiple layups and Niumeitolu concluded the quarter by hitting a three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining, to end the period at 56-35 in favor of the Wildcats.
Weber State closed out the game strong, using three separate scoring runs in the final quarter to maintain their momentum and secure the decisive 76-53 victory.
