Wildcats pick up two wins in Titan Classic

FULLERTON, Calif – Weber State women's volleyball made school history today as they picked up two wins defeating Cal State Fullerton 3-1 and Air Force 3-0 giving them a 5-0 overall record on the season. The best start to any season in Wildcat history.
"We were extremely resilient today," head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. "Adversity hit us hard today and I am proud of how our kids responded. We showed today that we are a team of fighters."
In the first match of the day, Weber State took down Cal State Fullerton in four sets. The Wildcats jumped out to an 11-6 lead. They continued to charge and finished the first set with a 25-17 score. The second set Weber State fell behind 9-13. CSF went on a 6-1 run that led them to a 25-19 win over WSU. The score was tied 1-1 going into the break.
Both teams started the third set out strong as the score was tied at 7-7. The Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to give them a 17-11 lead over the Titans. WSU finished the set with a kill by Megan Gneiting giving them a set score of 25-22 and a 2-1 set advantage going into the fourth and final set.
Cal State Fullerton started the fourth set with a 9-7 lead over the Wildcats but the 'Cats countered with a 10-0 run giving them a 17-9 lead. WSU maintained the lead and despite strong efforts from the Titans came out with a 25-23 fourth set win and an overall 3-1 match victory.
Against CSF, the Wildcats were led by Amanda Varley who had 17 kills and 36 attacks for a .361 percentage. Gneiting posted the best hitting percentage of the afternoon with .462 with 13 kills and 26 attacks. Rylin Roberts also had double digit kills with 10.
Defensively the Wildcats were led by Jesse Hover who posted a new career high of 21 digs. Aubrey Saunders had the game high of seven block assists. Taylor Kinikini had the game high of 45 assists.
WSU and CSF were close statistically when it came to attacks. Weber State had 55 kills, 136 attacks and ended the game with a .265 percentage while CS Fullerton had 54 kills, 138 attacks and a .232 percentage. The Wildcats only had 19 attack errors to the Titans 22. Weber State out blocked CS Fullerton 24-10.
The Wildcats picked up a 3-0 win over Air Force in the second game of the Titan Classic. The first set Weber State downed the Falcons 25-18. The Wildcats dominated the second set. They started off on a 6-0 run and ended the match on a 7-0 run and ended the second set with a 25-9 score.
After the second set break Weber State jumped out with a 15-9 lead. They maintained a four point lead the rest of the set as they finished with a 25-21 third set score and a 3-0 match win.
Weber State had 38 kills to Air Force's 28 and only had nine attack errors to the Falcons 24. The Wildcats ended the match with a .354 percentage.
Varley led the Wildcats with kills with her 11 on the night. This is Varley's fifth consecutive game with double figure kills. Bailey Irwin came in and stepped up with 33 assists which is her new career high. Thamires Cavalcanti had the match high with 13 digs and Megan Thompson had the match high of blocks with five on the night including one solo block.
Weber State will take on The Citadel Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the last match of the Titan Classic.Â
