Wildcats beat Aggies in season opener

OGDEN - Weber State never trailed and kicked off the 2017-18 season with a 65-59 win over in-state rival Utah State Friday night at the Dee Events Center.Â
WSU jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead before the Aggies came back with a 14-6 run to tie the game with 6:13 left in the first half.Â
The Wildcats led by as many as 10 again with 6:09 to play before another Aggie run cut the lead to two with 3:02 remaining. WSU led by four with under a minute to play when Zach Braxton had a block and came back with a breakaway slam dunk on the other end to seal the win.Â
The Wildcats outrebounded Utah State 36-32 and outshot USU 42 percent to 37 percent. WSU also made six 3-pointers and has six blocked shots and shot 81 percent from the free throw line.Â
In his first game as a Wildcat, Brekkott Chapman finished with 10 points, three rebounds and two blocked shots.Â
It was the first time the Wildcats have beaten Utah State in back-to-back seasons since 1998 and 1999.Â
Weber State is back home Tuesday to take on West Coast Baptist at 7 p.m. at the Dee Events Center before heading to the Island of the Bahamas Showcase.Â

Ryan Richardson led the way with 20 points, six rebounds and two assists and knocked down four 3-pointers.
