Weber State battles in Big Sky Tournament loss

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For the tenth time in school history Weber State made it to the Big Sky Tournament and despite a strong fight fell to North Dakota in four sets.

"That was an incredible volleyball game," said head coach Jeremiah Larsen. "I am proud of our women, the way they competed, and never gave up on this season. It's definitely one to remember."

In the first set North Dakota went on an early 8-1 run that gave them a two point lead over the Wildcats. UND pushed their lead to 18-12 going into the final plays of the first game. Weber State came up with two big kills but the Fighting Hawks captured the first set 25-17.


The two teams kept the opening points of the game close in the second set starting off with a 5-5 score and later a 12-12 score. WSU pushed for a 5-1 run that gave the Wildcats a 17-14 lead. North Dakota managed to tie things up at 23-23 but a kill by Andrea Hale followed immediately by a kill by Kennedy Redd gave WSU the second set victory with a 25-23 score.

The second set proved the best offensively for the Wildcats as they recorded 17 kills from 32 attacks with six errors for a .312 hitting percentage.

North Dakota commanded the third set as they maintained a lead the a majority of the set and came out with a 25-19 victory. Hale went off for the Wildcats in the third set however recording 11 kills for WSU.

With the match on the line, Weber State was looking to stay alive in the fourth and their efforts showed it. Weber State didn't give North Dakota any breathing room as they kept things tied or within two points the majority of the set. With things tied at 22-22, Redd came into the game and had a big kill for the Wildcats to give them a 23-22 lead.

North Dakota called a timeout and came out of it scoring two points to bring the game to set point. Amanda Varley answered with a big kill to bring the score to 24-24 and force the set into extra points.

Both teams were not backing down as they scored point for point with each other with things all tied up at 27-27. UND had the serve with a 28-27 lead and the Fighting Hawks managed a block to capture the fourth set 29-27 and the overall match in four sets.

Weber State was led by Hale who had 24 kills from 54 attacks with eight errors for a .296 hitting percentage. Varley and Megan Gneiting each had double-double's for WSU. Varley had 15 kills and 13 digs for WSU while Megan Gneiting added 12 kills and 12 digs.

Hannah Hill-DeYoung led WSU's defensive efforts with six blocks. Another top defender was Thamires Cavalcanti with 17 digs.

Weber State finished the game with 64 kills from 169 attacks with 29 errors for a .207 percentage. North Dakota finished with a 58 kills from 145 attacks with only 16 errors for a .290 hitting percentage. The Fighting Hawks recorded  16 team blocks and 65 digs to the Wildcats nine team blocks and 63 digs.

Weber State has finished the 2017 with a 9-20 overall record. WSU came into the Big Sky Tournament for the 10th time in school history and is now 5-9 in Big Sky post season action.
