OGDEN – Weber State jumped out to a big lead, then held on for an 84-77 win over Western State in an exhibition game Thursday night at the Dee Events Center.
Weber State led by as many as 29 points in the first half and held a 52-26 halftime lead over the Mountaineers.
Western State started the second half on a 35-13 run and cut the Wildcats lead to four points with 6:41 to play. WSU led again by four with 1:13 remaining but made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.
"We played terrific in the first half and had great energy and then human nature kicked in in the second half," said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. "We got a big lead and let our guard down and didn't have the same intensity. It was a valuable lesson for us tonight that we have to keep playing."
Sophomore Jerrick Harding led the way with 26 points and six assists. He was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line to go along with four rebounds and two steals.
Playing in his first game as a Wildcat, junior Brekkott Chapman had 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots, while shooting 8-of-11 from the field.
Ryan Richardson had 14 points and made three 3-points and Zach Braxton added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Ben Beauchamp had 31 points to lead Western State, a Division II school out of Gunnison, Colorado.
Weber State now prepares for the 2017-18 regular season opener as the Wildcats host in-state rival Utah State next Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.
