SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Under the sunny skies of northern California, the Wildcats got the outdoor season off to a solid start.

The Weber State men's and women's track and field teams participated in the Hornet Invitational, hosted by Sacramento State, on Friday and Saturday and had some strong showings to get the season underway.

Weber State's men's team captured the team title at the event, beating Pac-12 California 166-164 on the final event, the men's 4x400 relay, to win the meet.

“I was very pleased that 22 of the 48 athletes had personal records this weekend,” Weber State Director of Track and Field Dan Walker said. “We are leading the Big Sky in eight events, and the men winning a very good meet is an outstanding accomplishment.

“Garazi (Larrakoetxea)'s jump is No. 4 on our high jump top 10 list, and Luca (Sinn)'s steeplechase time will get him into the NCAA first round.”

In the running events, Tyson Green won the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:36.76, while Alex Reece won the 200 meters at 21.37 and was second in the 100 meters at 10.67.

The Wildcats had a strong showing in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, with Luca Sinn winning the event with a time of 8:57.41, followed by Jordan Cross at 9:00.01 (2nd), Dallin Leatham at 9:22.30 (3rd), and Nic Demler at 9:31.78 (4th).

Weber State's 4x400 relay team of Joey Czellecz, Daunte Atkinson, Josh Hartford, and Reece Lafaye also finished first with a time of 3:14.87. Lafaye also had a strong showing in the pole vault, finishing second at 14 feet, 3 1/4 inches.

Joe Maloney was second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:51.14, while Daunte Atkinson was second in the 400 meters at 49.68.

Josh Hartford finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.62, and Ryan Carlson was third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.83.

In the field events, Anthony Gregory won the high jump at 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches.

On the women's side, Candace Sharp won the 5,000 meters at 17:29.25, followed by Lexie Green at 17:33.95, Michayla Miller at 17:37.89, and Marlee Mitchell at 17:48.13 as the Wildcats took the top four spots.

Maddie Cannon was second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at 10:49.99, followed by Katie Cornell at 11:10.42 (3rd), and Summer Harper at 11:19.24 (4th).

Tawnie Moore finished second in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.13.

In the field events, Garazi Larrakoetxea won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 9 1/4 inches.

Weber State will be back in action on March 31 at the Utah Valley Invitational in Orem, Utah.
