WSU drops home opener to USU in three sets

9/12/2017 9:04:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

OGDEN - Weber State University's volleyball team had an unfortunate ending to it's home opener against Utah State as they fell in three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-16.

"I thought we played hard tonight," said head coach Jeremiah Larsen.  "Utah State didn't make a lot of mistakes and there wasn't a lot of room for us to make the errors we did. The bottom line, our passing fell apart in the second and third sets and we were never able to sustain our offense."

The first set was the most aggressive and solid performance of the night by the Wildcats. WSU fell behind 4-1 early in the set but kept the score within one point until things were all tied up at 12-12. Later in the set Utah State went on a 5-2 run giving them a 22-18 lead. Weber State pounded back for a 23-21 score. The Aggies finished out the set with a kill and a Wildcat error.

WSU maintained some momentum in the second set keeping the score close and even tied it up on three separate occasions but Utah State pulled through with an early 9-3 run that Weber State couldn't catch and eventually the Aggies pulled away with the 25-20 win and the two set lead going into the break.

Utah State controlled the majority of the third set but Weber State's inconsistent passing gave the Aggies the 25-16 third set win and the overall match win 3-0.

Weber State was led by Amanda Varley who had 11 kills from 39 attacks. Megan Gneiting also had an impressive offensive performance with a six kills from 15 attacks with only one error for the match high percentage of .375.  Ashlyn Power was a huge help for the 'Cats offensively as she had 31 assists.

Aubrey Saunders was the star on the defensive side of the stats as she had six blocks. Jesse Hover and Thamires Cavalcanti each added seven digs for WSU.

Overall, WSU hit .147 with 35 kills from 109 attacks. The Wildcats managed 35 digs  and nine team blocks. Utah State hit .292 overall on the match with 47 kills from 106 attacks. The Aggies put up 45 digs and nine team blocks.

Weber State now drops to 1-9 overall on the season and will return home Wednesday, Sept. 13 to take on another in-state rival, Utah Valley, at 7:00 p.m. at the Swenson Gym. The week of in-state rivalries will conclude Friday, Sept. 15 at Brigham Young University.
