Seven Wildcats earn All-America honors

OGDEN - 2018 was another record-setting season for Weber State football. The Wildcats finished the year with seven players earning All-America honors.
Wildcat senior offensive lineman Iosua Opeta led the way as he was named to five different All-America teams, to earn consensus All-America honors.
Opeta was named a first team All-American by STATS and the Walter Camp Foundation. He also earned second team honors from the Associated Press, the AFCA and HERO Sports.
He started all 13 games for the Wildcats and served as a team captain. He also started every game of his final three seasons and finished his career playing in 50 career games.
Six other Wildcats also earned All-America honors. Senior linebacker LeGrand Toia was named to two different All-America teams. He earned first team honors from HERO Sports and third team honors from STATS. Toia started all 13 games at linebacker for the Wildcats and lead the team in tackles. He was also fourth in the Big Sky in sacks and fifth in tackles for loss. Â
Senior Brady May earned All-America honors for the second-straight year as he was named to the first team by HERO Sports as a special teams player.
Sophomore return specialist Rashid Shaheed also repeated as an All-American. Shaheed was named to the second team by HERO Sports. He finished the season second in the nation in kickoff returns and had two kickoff returns for touchdowns.
Freshman running back Josh Davis won the Jerry Rice Award as the National Freshman of the Year. He was also named to the HERO Sports All-America third team and earned Freshman All-America honors.
Wildcat junior defensive end Adam Rodriguez was also named to the HERO Sports All-America third team, giving him All-America honors for the first time in his career.
Senior defensive tackle Filipe Sitake also earned All-America honors for the first time in his career. He was named to the third team by the Associated Press.
In addition, Shaheed, Trey Tuttle and Ty Whitworth were named to the Sophomore All-America team by HERO Sports.
Weber State also had a school-record 13 players named to the Big Sky All-Conference first team, including all seven players that earned All-America honors.
Head coach Jay Hill and the Wildcats won back-to-back Big Sky titles for the first time in school history and won 10 or more games in back-to-back years for the first time ever as the 'Cats finished 10-3 overall and 7-1 in Big Sky play.
Weber State was also ranked as high as third in the nation, the highest in school history, and earned the No. 2 seed in the FCS Playoffs.
