Wildcats drop Big Sky opener 64-58 to Eagles

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball started Big Sky Conference play off with a 64-58 loss to Eastern Washington.
"Over break we challenged players on some specific things," said head coach Velaida Harris. "I thought today we put forth our best effort in trying to achieve those things. We are better when we run but we have to get better in the half court and trusting our offense. Kayla Watkins showed up and played hard for us. Dominique Williams had a great game on the boards. It sucks to lose but it's great to see progress."
With 2:51 to go in the first quarter, WSU's strong defensive kicked into gear and held EWU scoreless for two minutes into the second quarter so WSU held the Eagles to a four minute scoring drought. Going into the half, WSU only trailed by five points with a 36-31 score.
The Wildcats had a big third quarter outscoring EWU 23-8 to take a 54-44 lead. To start the fourth quarter, Dominique Williams had a tip in to give WSU a 12 point lead. The largest lead for WSU in the game.
The fourth quarter the Eagles held WSU to just four points and a nine minute scoring drought. The Eagles ultimately claimed a 64-58 victory over WSU.
Weber State was led by Watkins who recorded her fourth double-double on the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman also added 17 points for WSU and Emily Drake had 14 on the day. Williams once again led WSU on the boards recording 15 total with six offensive rebounds.
Overall the Wildcats shot 34 percent from the field, 16 percent from the three and 78 percent from the free throw line. WSU pulled down 47 total rebounds, had six assists, 21 turnovers, four blocks and 10 steals.
Weber State is now 3-8 overall on the season and are 0-1 in Big Sky Conference action. WSU will return to action by hosting the University of Idaho on Dec. 31 at 2:00 p.m.
