The loss ends Weber State's season at 10-3.
Maine totaled 286 yards and held Weber State to 271 yards, and the Black Bears held the Wildcats to -1 on total yards. WSU also had four turnovers and was sacked three times.
The Black Bears held a 7-3 lead at halftime and opened the half with a 67-yard pass play for a touchdown just 1:28 into the half. The Wildcats came back with a field goal to make it 14-6 midway through the period. WSU then scored a touchdown with 1:55 left in the third quarter as Jake Constantine found Devon Cooley for a 33-yard touchdown that made it 14-12.
Maine broke the game open with a 45-yard touchdown run and then after an interception, added a 46-yard field goal to make it 23-12 with 1:34 to play. The Wildcats closed the game with a 12-yard touchdown from Constantine to Darryl Denby.
"That one hurts really bad," said Weber State head coach Jay Hill. "We had a lot of opportunities and let some things slip away. Maine is a tough team and was so good against the run. We just couldn't take advantage of our opportunities."
Constantine was 24 for 52 passing for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Denby finished with seven catches for 154 yards and a touchdown, while Cooley had four catches for 69.
Defensively, LeGrand Toia led the way with 10 tackles and his first interception of the season.
Weber State won 10 or more games in back-to-back years for the first time in school history. The Wildcats also won back-to-back Big Sky titles for the first time ever and received a seed in the FCS Playoffs for the first time in their history.
WSU also had a school record 13 players named to the Big Sky All-Conference first team and 19 players earned all-conference honors.
"This team has accomplished a lot, especially this senior class. We have to keep taking steps forward and keep building. The future is very bright."
