Late fourth quarter surge gives WSU 89-73 victory over Montana

OGDEN –  Weber State women's basketball had a huge 15-0 run in the fourth quarter that propelled them to an 89-73 victory over Montana Wednesday night.

Weber State jumped out to an early 11-5 lead to start the game off. The six point lead didn't last long as Montana went on a 9-2 run to end the first quarter to have a 21-19 lead over the Wildcats.

WSU started the second quarter off with a four minute cold streak. WSU didn't make a single field goal in that time and the drought was finally broken with a three ball by Larryn Brooks. During the Wildcat cold spell Montana took an 10-0 lead. WSU chipped away with an 8-0 run and brought things within two.

With one minute remaining in the half, Weber State took a 40-39 lead. A jumper by Emily Drake in the last minute gave WSU a 42-39 lead going into the half.

Late in the third quarter Montana went on a 10-0 run that took a 55-52 lead over the Wildcats with three minutes left in the quarter. WSU overtook the lead with just 19 seconds on the clock and had a 61-59 lead going into the final quarter of play.

Weber State stole the momentum in the fourth quarter by starting things off with a 15-0 run. Montana didn't make a field goal for six minutes. The push to the finish was easy for the Wildcats after that as they captured an 89-73 win over Montana.

Weber State was led by Brooks who put up 30 points. Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman had a stellar game with 21 points going 7-9 from the field. She also had eight assists and six rebounds. Briana Gray followed in suit with 15 points. She also had five boards and four assists.

Jocelyn Adams has consistently been a powerhouse rebounder for the Wildcats and tonight was no different as she pulled down 13 boards for the game high. She also rocked the defensive efforts with four blocks.

Montana was led by Caitlin Lonergan who had 18 points. UM ended the night with 45 rebounds, 18 assists and 10 turnovers. They shot 38 percent from the field, 40 percent from the three and 66 percent from the free throw line.

Weber State ended the night with 36 rebounds, 24 assists and only five turnovers. The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field, 44 percent from the three and 66 percent from the free throw line.

WSU is now 19-9 overall on the season and 11-6 in Big Sky Conference. The Wildcats aren't out of the woods yet and are still fighting for a top four seed in the Big Sky Championships next week. WSU is currently tied for third place with Eastern Washington.

Weber State's final home game of the season will be Friday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m. It will be the final night in the Dee Events Center for WSU's four seniors, Kailie Quinn, Jocelyn Adams, Larryn Brooks and Briana Gray.
