Wildcat track wins eight events at USU meet

The Weber State men's and women's track and field teams combined to win eight events and had several seasonal best performances at the Utah State Mark Faldmo Invitational last weekend in Logan.
 

MEN

The Wildcat men's team won four events and finished in the top three in 10 other events.

Justin Herbert took home first place in the hammer throw with a career best throw of 195-01, to win the event by more than 15 feet. That mark ranks as the fifth best in Weber State history and is the second best in the Big Sky Conference this season.

Daunte Atkinson was first in the 400 meters at 48.33 and Joey Czellecz took home first place in the 400 meter hurdles with a seasonal best time of 53.43. That time is one of the best in the Big Sky this season.

Weber State also finished first in the 4x400 meter relay at 3:16.68 and was second in the 4x100 meter relay at 41.63.

Freshman Nick Benham was second in the shot put with a seasonal best mark of 55-05.75, which is the second best mark in Weber State history and currently the fourth best in the conference.

Anthony Gregory was second in the high jump with a seasonal best mark of 6-09, which is currently the second best in the conference. Logan Leavitt finished second in the long jump with a seasonal best mark of 22-08.

Trey Deveraux was second in the pole vault at 15-07.75 and Keaton Pace was third at 15-01.75.

Seth Fortin finished third in two events, taking third in the 100 meters at 11.06 and the 200 meters at 21.94, a seasonal best time.

Caleb Whitney had a seasonal best time of 14.82 in the 110 meter hurdles and Brandon Yardley was third in the 800 meters at 1:55.47.
 

WOMEN

The Wildcat women's team won four events and placed in the top three in six other events. On the track Brinn Jensen came home with the title in the 400 meters with a seasonal best time of 55.91. She also finished third in the long jump at 17-07.

Freshman Kate Sorensen won the title in the 400 meter hurdles, registering a time of 1:00.59. The Wildcats also took first in the 4x100 meter relay at 47.41 and were third in the 4x400 meter relay at 3:57.56.

Emily Morgan finished third in the 100 meters at 12.48 and Amy Teal was third in the 200 at 25.46.

In the field events, freshman Starlee Woodbury won the title in the long jump with a mark of 18-07.25.

Sophie Merritt posted a seasonal best mark of 46-07.50 to finish third in the shot put. That mark is also the seventh best in WSU history. Rebecca Wenz was third in the javelin at 136-03.
 
Up next

Weber State is off to California to compete in two meets this week at Long Beach State and Azusa Pacific. WSU has just three more weeks before the Big Sky Championships.
