Wildcats come up with double header sweep at Jackrabbit Invitational

Weber State volleyball came away with two victories in the first day of the Jackrabbit Invitational at South Dakota State. First the Wildcats defeated UW-Greenbay in five sets and then later defeated tournament host SDSU in four.

Against UW-Greenbay, Weber State jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Greenbay came back with a 6-1 run to tie everything at 8-8. The first set remained tied all the way up until 27-27.

The Wildcats strung together three consecutive points to win the first set. First, Hannah Hill-DeYoung had a kill to tie things up 28-28. Then Ashlyn Power dropped a service ace to bring the match to set point for the sixth time. To give Weber State the first set victory, Kennedy Redd slammed down a kill allowing WSU the 30-28 set win.

Weber State propelled themselves to a second set win as well. Half way through the set WSU strung together a 10-3 run giving them a late 20-11 lead. The Wildcats had four consecutive points to end the set. The 4-0 run started with a kill by Hill-DeYoung, followed by an ace by Power and finished things off with another kill by Hill-DeYoung.

Weber State had the two set lead going into the break. Coming out of the break Greenbay found some energy jumping to a 10-6 lead over WSU early in the third set. Greenbay pushed ahead for a 16-10 lead and later a 21-17 lead. Weber State was able to put off set point with a kill by Rylin Roberts and a Greenbay error but ultimately a Greenbay kill gave WSU the third set loss with a 25-21 score.

The momentum was in favor of Greenbay in the fourth set as they were able take the fourth set with a 25-18 score thanks to a 6-1 run over WSU to end the set. Things were all tied up at two sets a piece forcing the match into a full five sets

Greenbay started the fifth set out with a 6-2 lead over Weber State. The Wildcats came back with a 5-0 run to tie things up at 7-7. Back to back kills by Andrea Hale quickly gave Weber State the momentum and they went on to claim the fifth set 15-11 and the overall match 3-2.

Hale led the Wildcats with 18 kills from 45 attacks. She also had a double double with 10 digs. Megan Gneiting also posted double digit kills with 14 from 35 total swings. Rylin Roberts had impressive defensive numbers with the match high of 19 digs.

Katelyn Erwin adde 16 digs for Weber State. Ashlyn Power had a double double with 49 assists and 11 digs.

Against South Dakota State, Weber State started the first set off with a 9-5 lead. To end the first set, the Wildcats went on a 6-1 run to defeat the Jackrabbits 25-16. The final point of the set was a kill from Wildcat newcomer Sam Schiess.

In the second game Weber State put together a 6-0 run to start things off. Later in the second set, WSU had a 5-1 run to take a 17-9 lead. South Dakota State wasn't giving up that easily as they had a 5-0 run late in the set to bring the score to 23-20. Weber State's Hill-DeYoung came up with a big kill followed by an ace by Power to give Weber State the 25-20 victory.

Weber State had a two game lead going into the break. The third set was the toughest for the Wildcats to find a break and take the momentum. The scored remained within one or two points the entire set. With things tied up at 24-24, Weber State took a 25-26 lead. SDSU came up with three straight points to claim the the third set 28-26.

The Wildcats had an 11-5 lead early in the set and then pushed to a 20-9 lead. Weber State had the match at set point with a 24-12 score. The Jackrabbits came up with four points to delay what was ultimately WSU's victory. Megan Gneiting had the final kill of the fourth set that gave Weber State a 25-16 lead and the match win three sets to one.

Weber State had five Wildcats with double digit kills. Gneiting led the way with 15 from 45 attacks. Roberts and Hale each added 13. Hill-DeYoung had 11 from 16 attacks with only one error for an impressive .625 percentage. Finally, Schiess had 10 kills for WSU.

Roberts had a double double as she also recorded 15 digs, Gneiting and Power each had 14 digs and Erwin had the match high with 22. Power put up a season high of 51 assists.

Weber State is now 3-2 overall on the season and will take on Seattle in the final day of the Jackrabbit Invitational tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. MST.
