Weber State starts Big Sky with four set victory over SUU

Weber State women's volleyball team started Big Sky Conference action at Southern Utah with a four set victory over the T-Birds.
In the first set the Wildcats were trailing 5-2. But they came back with a 6-0 run to take an 8-5 lead. Weber State maintained the lead until SUU had a 4-0 run to take a 19-18 lead over the Wildcats. Southern Utah pushed to a 24-21 lead and thanks to a kill by Sam Schiess and a service ace by Rylin Roberts, WSU put off set point but ultimately the Thunderbirds claimed the first set 25-23.
Weber State had a slow start to the second set but found some momentum for a 4-0 run that gave them a 16-15 lead. Later, when the set was tied 18-18, Weber State went on a 6-2 run to the set into game point. Aubrey Saunders-Adams slammed down a kill to give Weber State a 25-21 second set victory.
The Wildcats finally started a set out strong as they jumped to a 6-3 lead over SUU and later pushed the lead to 15-10. The Thunderbirds came back and tied the set at 19-19 and forced things into extra points by tying it up at 24-24. Megan Gneiting was able to finish the third set out for Weber State with a big kill to give WSU a 26-24 third set victory.
Weber State now had a two set lead over Southern Utah going into the fourth set and the fourth set proved to be a classic comeback tale for the Wildcats.
Southern Utah controlled the momentum in the fourth set. The T-Birds had a 9-2 run late in the fourth set to take an 18-12 lead over WSU. Weber State called a time out to try to gain some footing to get out of the slump. Trailing 14-20, Weber State came up with a 12-3 run. That run tied the match up at 21-21 and drove them to a 25-23 victory.
Weber State was led by Andrea Hale who had 16 kills from 47 swings for a .213 hitting percentage. Rylin Roberts was not far behind as she had 13 kills from 41 attacks. Roberts also added 13 kills to WSU's defensive efforts for a double-double. Megan Gneiting was the third Wildcat in the match to have double digit kills as she recorded 11.
Defensively, Helan Khouri stepped up and had 25 digs for Weber State. Hannah Hil-DeYoung had six blocks.
Weber State had a total of 56 kills from 164 attacks with 22 errors for a .207 hitting percentage on the night. They also racked up 66 digs and nine team blocks. The Wildcats also managed five service aces.
Southern Utah had 61 kills from 155 attacks and 21 errors for a .258 percentage. SUU had 80 digs and 11 team blocks.
Weber State is now 6-4 overall on the season and 1-0 in Big Sky Conference play. The Wildcats will head to Northern Arizona to take on the Lumberjacks Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MST.
