Weber State women's basketball snapped a 10 game losing streak by defeating Northern Colorado, 55-54, Thursday afternoon.Â
"Listen, our team deserved this win," said head coach Velaida Harris. "We were focused and determined to play team defense. They have a prolific scorer who we worked to wear down in the first half. We have to do our individual jobs so that the team can win. Our identity is on the defensive end, but we had players step up and make some tough finishes. Proud of each and every one of them. That's a great win for us!"
The game started out close between the two teams as they jumped out to a 10-10 tie with four minutes left in the first quarter. The Bears finished out the first quarter with a 6-2 run and WSU trailed 16-12 going into the second quarter.Â
Weber State started the second quarter by outscoring Northern Colorado 9-5 to tie the game back up at 21-21. Neither team had more than a three point lead the remainder of the first half. WSU had a 29-27 lead with just 30 seconds on the clock but UNC sunk a pair of free throws to tie it up at 29-29 at the break.Â
Shianne Johnson started the second half on a high note for WSU as she came in and sunk an early three-pointer. Johnson's three ball sparked a 6-0 run for WSU and they jumped out to a 35-29 lead. The Wildcats ended the third quarter on a 9-3 run and went into the fourth quarter with a 46-38 lead.Â
Both teams started the fourth quarter with a 2:15 Â scoring drought. Northern Colorado broke the drought first with a made three pointer. Weber State's drought continued and was finally broken by a jumper from Emily Drake. At that point, UNC was on an 8-2 run.
The Wildcats stayed strong and had a 54-50 lead with just under one minute remaining. With 16 seconds on the clock, the Bears sunk a deep three to tie the game up at 54-54.Â
Weber State had the ball and Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman drove to the hoop and drew a foul with one second left. Welch-Coleman made her first free throw, missed her second, Drake rebounded the ball and the final buzzer sounded to give Weber State a 55-54 victory over Northern Colorado.Â
WSU's Kayla Watkins led all scorers with 14 points. Welch-Coleman was not far behind with 13 on the afternoon. Freshman, Ciara James had the game high rebounds for Weber State with seven.Â
The Wildcats finished the game shooting 35 percent from the field, 31 percent from beyond the arc, and 61 percent from the free-throw line. WSU had 10 turnovers to UNC's 19. However, UNC had 41 rebounds to WSU's 34.Â
The Wildcats are now 4-13 overall on the season and 1-6 in Big Sky Conference action. Weber State has a rare Saturday in January with no action but will return home on Jan. 24 to host Montana State and Jan. 26 to host Montana.Â
