Weber State drops a tough one in five to Sac State

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball dropped a tough one in five sets to Sacramento State Saturday afternoon. 

What Head Coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "I liked our effort for the match. We just lost the serve receive battle. It's hard to win when you lose that part of the game."

How it happened: Sacramento State put together an 8-1 run over the Wildcats early in the first set. The Hornets continued to push ahead of the Wildcats eventually taking a 20-13 lead. Weber State found some fire and put together five consecutive points and an 8-2 run to come back but still trailed 23-21. WSU couldn't finish it and Sac pulled out the 25-21 first game win. 

In the second set, Weber State had a slow start trailing 6-1. The Wildcats dug themselves out of the hole and with a 4-0 run started by a kill from Megan Gneiting. WSU tied the set up at 13-13. The run continued as WSU went on to get seven more unanswered points to take a 20-13 lead. As a part of that run, Aubrey Saunders-Adams had a slam down kill as well as back-to-back blocks one of which was assisted by Gneiting. The Wildcats had an 11-0 run before Sac State could stop them. 

To close out the set in favor of the Wildcats, Dani Nay pounded down a kill right down the line and Sac State had an error and WSU took the 25-17 game win. 

The third set was a nail biter, both teams matched each other point for point and was all tied up until a 12-12 score. Sac State was the first to pull away and took a 19-14 lead. Weber State hung tight but couldn't finish and Sac State took the 25-19 third set win. 

Weber State started the fourth set slow, trailing 7-3. WSU came up with a 13-2 run and with nine consecutive points to take a 16-9 lead. Weber State persevered and pushed the lead to 23-14. To close out the set, Saunders-Adams dropped an ace to take WSU to set point. The Wildcats claimed set four 25-15. 

Sac State jumped out to a 4-1 lead over WSU but the Wildcats battled and brought the score within one point at an 8-7 score. Sac State then went on a 3-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. Sac State was able to execute and take the fifth set 15-11 and the overall match 3-2. 

 Killing It: Nay led the Wildcats with 16 kills. She had 41 swings and five errors for a .268 percentage. Gneiting also had double digit kills with 14 from 45 attacks and four errors for a .222 percentage. 

WSU ended the night with 51 total kills from 165 swings with 19 errors for a .194  percentage. 

Weber State had four service aces, three of them coming from Nay. 

Ashlyn Power continued to lead as she helped out Weber State with 45 assists. 

Digging it: Weber State had five Wildcats record double digit digs. Rylin Roberts led the way with 18. Katelyn Erwin had 16, Power added 14 while Gneiting contributed 13. In total, WSU had 78 digs. 

Blocking it: The Great Wall of Weber was out in full force against the Hornets. WSU ended with 13.0 total team blocks. There were three Wildcats who ended the match with five or more blocks. Adams led the charge with six, Gneiting and Hannah Hill-DeYoung recorded five each. Weber State ended with 20 block assists and three solos. 

Doubling it: Weber State had two Wildcats with double-doubles. Power had her seventh on the year with 45 assists and 14 digs. Gneiting had her fourth with 14 kills and 13 digs. 

Notes to know: Weber State is now 11-6 overall on the season and 2-4 in Big Sky Conference play.  

Next Up: WSU will hit the road to take on Montana and Montana State before returning home to take on Idaho Oct. 24.
