Weber State takes down Southern Utah in four sets

10/31/2019 10:26:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball broke a 24 year old Halloween curse by picking up a four set win over Southern Utah. This was the first win on Halloween the Wildcats have had since 1995.

What head coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "It's nice to get a win and Southern Utah played a great game. We need to be able to respond to adversity and not panic if we have any hope of competing with the best of the Big Sky.

How it happened: Weber State started the first set off strongly jumping putting together a 7-0 run to take a 16-7 lead. Southern Utah made a little bit of a surge going on scoring four consecutive points but it wasn't quite enough as WSU came away with a 25-16 win.

In the second set, Weber State jumped out to an 8-3 lead. Southern Utah came up with an 8-2 lead and took a 15-12 lead over the Wildcats. WSU brought the score within two but the T-Birds went off on a 6-0 run to end the set for a 25-17 win.

The third set started off with some power from the Wildcats. Aubrey Saunders-Adams and Megan Gneiting had back-to-back blocks and Gneiting slammed down a kill and just like that Weber State had a 7-2 lead. Southern Utah battled back and tied the third set up 15-15. Later, WSU trailed 20-18 but came up with a strong 7-2 run to take the third set 25-22.

The fourth set started off back and forth for both teams. Eventually SUU took a two point lead and fended off the Wildcats for several points. WSU trailed 19-16 and went on a 5-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. Gneiting and Hannah Hill-DeYoung had a block to take WSU to set point. SUU managed two kills and an ace to stay alive and trail 24-23.  A Southern Utah service error is what finally gave WSU the 25-23 win.

Killing It: The Wildcat offense was led by Gneiting who had 16 kills from 41 attacks with three errors for a .317 percentage. Saunders-Adams also recorded double digit kills for WSU with 11 from 22 attacks with four errors for a .318 percentage.

Weber State had 53 total kills from 148 attacks with 20 errors for a .223 hitting percentage.

Ashlyn Power continued her pursuit of the all-time career record at Weber State as she recorded 43 assists on the night.

Digging it: Weber State had 66 total digs on the night with three Wildcats digging out double digits. Helena Khouri led the way with 18 digs. Power had 15 and Rylin Roberts added 12.

Doubling it: Weber State had just on Wildcat with a double-double. Power had her 12th on the year with 43 assists and 15digs.

Notes to know: Weber State has a 2-13 record on Halloween. Weber State has never played Southern Utah on Halloween. The Wildcats are now 16-6 overall on the season and 7-4 in Big Sky play.

Next Up: The Wildcats will stay at home and host Northern Arizona on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Swenson Gym.
