Weber State rolls Southern Utah in three sets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Weber State volleyball took down Southern Utah in three sets Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Big Sky tournament. 

What head coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "It's nice to get that monkey off our back. I thought our girls fought from point one, and I loved our composure." 

How it happened: Weber State showed they came to compete by starting the first set off with an early 6-1 run. Later in the set WSU went on a 5-0 run and SUU couldn't catch up as WSU finished the set with a 25-13 score. WSU hit an even .400 in the first set with 14 kills from 30 attacks and only two errors. WSU also racked up four total team blocks. 

Southern Utah took the lead early  in the first set and maintained that lead until Weber State started a 10-3 run to tie it up at 10-10 and push on for an 18-12 lead. Weber State put together a 4-0 run to end the second set. Dani Nay ended the run with back-to-back kills to close it in WSU's favor with a 25-18 score. 

The Wildcats had a 10-1 run early in the third set. Weber State never let Southern Utah catch up and went on to claim the third set with a 25-21 score.  

 Killing It:  Weber State was led by Megan Gneiting who had 13 kills from 27 attacks with just three errors for a .370 percentage.  Rylin Roberts had 12 kills and Nay added 10 for the Wildcats. In total, Weber State hit 47 kills from 121 attacks with 12 errors for a .289 percentage. 

Digging it: Weber State ended the match with 72 digs and five Wildcats recording double figures. Ashlyn Power led the way with 14. Helena Khouri and Katelyn Erwin each added 13 digs and Roberts and Gneiting each had 11. 

Blocking it: WSU ended the match with 11 total team blocks. Gneiting and Hannah DeYoung had six block assists a peice. Aubrey Saunders-Adams was right there with them as she had one solo and four assists for five total. 

Doubling it: Weber State had three Wildcats with double-doubles. Gneiting with 13 kills and 11 digs, Roberts with 12 kills and 11 digs. Power recorded 36 assists and 14 digs for her 14th double-double on the year. 

Notes to know:  Weber State volleyball is now 23-7 overall on the season and is tied with the third most wins in school history. This is the first time WSU has won a Big Sky Tournament match since 2008. This is the fourth time in school history WSU has made it to the second round of the Big Sky tournament. WSU now has a 6-10 record in Big Sky tournament action. 

Next Up: Weber State will advance to the semifinal round of the tournament and will take on the winner of Northern Arizona and Idaho on Friday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. (MT).
