Wildcats fall in heartbreaking five set battle in Big Sky finals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Weber State volleyball battled to the last point but couldn't pull it out and fell to Northern Colorado in five sets in the Big Sky Championship Match. 

How it happened: Weber State was able to creep out to a narrow two point lead early in the set. Later WSU was able to go on a 6-1 run but Northern Colorado fought back and never let Weber State keep the momentum for very long. Weber State finished the first set with a 5-1 run. Megan Gneiting and Hannah DeYoung came up with a huge block to put WSU at set point. To finish off the first set 25-23, Gneiting slammed down a kill. 

Weber State started the second set with the momentum in its favor for a 7-2 run. The Bears came up with a 7-0 run to take a 12-9 lead over the Wildcats. WSU came back to tie the game and it remained tied until UNC broke for a narrow two point lead to hit the 20 point mark first. Weber State came back and fought through those final points of the set but the Bears came away with a 25-22 victory.

The third set was back and forth between both teams. Later in the set, WSU went on a 7-1 to take a 15-11 lead. The Bears tied the set up at 17-17, but the Wildcats pushed on to be the first to 20. Tied at 24-24, Northern Colorado made a big push at the end to take the third set 26-24. 

Weber State jumped out to a 14-6 lead early in the fourth set thanks to a 10-2 WSU run. The Wildcats never looked back after that and went on to claim set four with a 25-15 score. 

Northern Colorado was the first to find some momentum in the fifth set jumping out to a 6-3 lead. The Bears maintained and pushed for a 12-9 lead over WSU. The Wildcats went on a 3-0 run to tie it up at 12-12. Despite a fight to the end, Weber State fell 15-13 in the fifth set. 

Killing It: Weber State was led by Dani Nay who rocked 185 kills from 46 attacks with five errors for a .283 hitting percentage. Megan Gneiting had 14 kills from 41 attacks with no errors for a .341 percentage. Rylin Roberts also hit double figures with 13 kills. In total, WSU had 52 kills with 15 errors from 171 attacks for a .216 percentage. 

Digging it: WSU had four Wildcats record double digit digs. Roberts led the team with 19 digs. Helena Khouri was right behind her with 18. Ashlyn Power and Katelyn Erwin each added 12. In total, WSU had 75 digs. 

Blocking it: Hannah DeYoung was a force on the net with nine block assists. Gneiting added six and Aubrey Saunders-Adams had five. In total, WSU had 14.5 total team blocks. 

Doubling it: There were two Wildcats to record double-doubles. Power ended the night with 42 assists and her 12 digs. While, Roberts had 13 kills and 19 digs. 

Notes to know:  Weber State has a 24-8 overall record. This was the first time in 31 years WSU competed for a Big Sky Championship. Senior Megan Gneiting broke into the 1,000 kill club with the help of her 14 on the night.
