OGDEN - In 1919, Woodrow Wilson was the President of the United States, a gallon of milk cost $0.32, the average salary was $750, Babe Ruth was traded to the New York Yankees and the pop-up toaster and traffic lights were invented.
And also in 1919, the school known then as Weber Normal College played its first football game. The team that later became the Wildcats played their first game on Oct. 8, 1919, losing 20-0 to Box Elder High School in Brigham City. Weber's first win was over Davis High, a 6-0 victory on Oct. 31, 1991, in Ogden.
Weber State will celebrate the 100 years of football throughout 2019 with weekly throwback posts on social media, as well as stories, articles and other information.
The 100 years of football at Weber State will also be celebrated at the Sept. 28th home game against Northern Iowa. Former players and coaches are invited to attend to celebrate the history of Weber State football.
Over the last 100 years, thousands of players have played football for the Wildcats. Weber State became a junior college in 1933, then became a four-year school in 1962. In 1963, the Wildcats became a charter member of the Big Sky Conference, joining Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, and Montana State as football playing schools.
The Wildcats have captured six Big Sky Conference titles, including winning back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. Weber State has had 38 players drafted in the NFL Draft and 62 players have earned All-America honors. Many coaches have come through Weber State before going on to careers in the NFL. Wildcat quarterback Jamie Martin won the Walter Payton Award in 1991 as the nation's top player and WSU running back Josh Davis won the Jerry Rice Award as the National Freshman of the Year in 2018.
