'Cats lead Big Sky with seven preseason all-conference selections

SPOKANE, Wash. - Weber State led the Big Sky with seven players on the 2019 Big Sky Football Preseason All-Conference team, which was released Monday as part of the conference's Football Media Kickoff in Spokane, Washington.

Sophomore running back Josh Davis, senior defensive end Adam Rodriguez, junior kick returner Rashid Shaheed, senior linebacker Auston Tesch, junior kicker Trey Tuttle, junior offensive guard Ty Whitworth and senior defensive end Jonah Williams were all named to the team, which was selected by media representatives from around the conference.

It's the second-straight year Weber State has led all schools with preseason all-conference selections. All seven players also earned All-Big Sky honors last season, with three also earning All-America honors.

Josh Davis won the Jerry Rice Award and was named the National Freshman of the Year and the Big Sky Freshman of the Year after a record-setting season last year. Davis was also named the Utah Collegiate Male AThlete of the Year and also earned All-America and first-team All-Big Sky honors after rushing for 1,362 yards and nine touchdowns. 

Adam Rodriguez returns as an All-American for the Wildcats on the defensive line and also earned first-team All-Big Sky honors. He started all 13 games and finished third in the Big Sky with seven sacks on the season. 

Rashid Shaheed returns as a two-time All-American return specialist. The junior has twice earned first-team All-Big Sky honors and was second in the nation in kick returns last season. He had two returns for touchdowns and is WSU's career leader with four kickoff returns for touchdowns. 

Senior Auston Tesch earned preseason honors for the first time in his career. He earned third-team All-Big Sky honors last season and recorded 41 tackles with five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. 

Junior Trey Tuttle has earned preseason All-Big Sky honors for the second-straight season. He is a two-time All-Big Sky performer, including second-team honors last season. He also earned All-America honors as a freshman and has 38 career field goals in two seasons, the fourth most in WSU history. 

Junior Ty Whitworth returns on the offensive line after earning first-team All-Big Sky honors last year. Whitworth has started all 27 games of his Wildcat career. 

Senior Jonah Williams is on the preseason all-conference team for the second-straight year. Williams earned first-team all-conference last season after starting all 13 games and recording 42 tackles on the year. He has 17 career tackles for loss with 7.5 career sacks. 

UC Davis quarterback Jake Maier and Montana linebacker Dante Olson were named the Big Sky preseason offensive and defensive players of the year. 

The Wildcats open the 2019 season Aug. 31 at San Diego State. WSU's home opener will be Sept. 7 against Cal Poly, set for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Stewart Stadium. Weber State will host Northern Iowa, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, North Dakota and Idaho State in home games this season.
