Weber State takes down Kansas State in four sets

9/13/2019 2:34:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball opened up the MSU Fall Invitational with a four set victory over Kansas State.

What head coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "Kansas State is a great team and an incredible program and I thought we never backed down. We stayed composed at times where we would fall apart in games past. We are going to enjoy this for a moment and get ready to play SMU."

How it happened: Late in the first set, Weber State trailed 21-15. A Sam Schiess kill sparked a 7-1 run to bring the score to 22-21. During that 7-1 run, Hannah Hill-DeYoung had three consecutive kills and a block assisted by Dani Nay. K-State was able to finish out the set and down Weber State 25-21.

In the second set, Weber State trailed 5-8, came back to tie it up at 8-8 and then take a 12-9 lead. WSU kept the lead until Kansas State tied it up at 23-23. The match remained tied until a K-State error and a kill by Nay gave Weber the 28-26 win.

Weber State stayed persistent in the third set, after getting down 15-12, WSU came back and tied it up at 18-18. Rylin Roberts had back-to-back kills to give Weber State match point and the third set win. With a 25-20 third set score, WSU took a 2-1 match lead.

Both teams were close in score early in the match but once Weber State took a solid lead, they never looked back. To end the match, Roberts slammed down a kill to give WSU the 25-20 fourth set victory.

Killin' It: Weber State was led by Roberts who rocked an impressive 19 kills from 44 swings with just five errors for a .318 hitting percentage. Her 19 kills were a new career-high.

Three other Wildcats had double-digit kills, Nay had a career-high with 15 kills. She had the game-high hitting percentage with .406 on the morning. Megan Gneiting and Hill-DeYoung each had 12 kills to contribute to WSU's offensive efforts.

In total, WSU had 67 kills from 161 attacks with 19 errors for a .298 hitting percentage.

Ashlyn Power put up 57 assists to add to WSU's offensive performance, a new season-high. Weber State also had five service aces on the match with Katelyn Erwin having two of them.

Diggin' the block party: Weber State also had four Wildcats in double-digit digs. Ashlyn Power led the way with 15. Erwin, Khouri and Roberts each added 12. WSU had 66 total digs in the match.

Hill-DeYoung led the way in blocking efforts with five assists. Gneiting was not far behind with her contribution of four. WSU ended the match with 7.0 total blocks.

Doubling Up: Weber State had two Wildcats record double-doubles. Roberts with her 19 kills and 12 digs and Power with her 57 assists and 15 digs.

Notes to know: Weber State is now 5-2 overall on the season. This was the third time in school history the purple Wildcats of Weber State played the purple Wildcats of Kansas State. This is the first time WSU has picked up a win.
