Weber State sweeps double header at MSU Fall Invite

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball closed out the MSU Fall Invitational with a pair of victories over Southern Methodist and Missouri State. WSU downed SMU in three sets and downed MSU in five. WSU finished the tournament with a 3-0 record to earn first place.
What head coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "We played well today and I'm happy for our players. SMU and Missouri State are great volleyball programs and I am proud of our players effort."
GAME 1 -
How it happened: Weber State started the match off strong and finished strong against SMU. In the first set, Weber State jumped out to a 7-1 lead and later expanded that lead to 20-7. The Wildcats went on to take a 25-11 first set victory.
Weber State started the second set out with the lead and never lost it. WSU powered through to a 25-19 set win. With a 2-0 lead Weber State headed into the third set.
The Wildcats started out by going on a 7-1 run to take a 14-9 lead. SMU battled to keep the score close and went on a 7-3 run to tie the game up at 22-22. Weber State found themselves at match point, but the Mustangs came up with a kill to tie the match back up at 24-24. Weber State finished out the match thanks to an SMU error and a big block by Ashlyn Power and Sam Schiess.
WSU claimed the match in three sets with final scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 26-24.
Killing It: Dani Nay led WSU's offensive efforts with 11 kills from 22 attacks and just one error for a .455 hitting percentage. Hannah DeYoung had a great offensive percentage with six kills from 13 swings with no errors for a .462.
Schiess had the game high in hitting percentage with an .833 on the night with five kills from six attacks and no errors.
In total, WSU had 38 kills from 97 attacks with only seven errors for a .320 hitting percentage.
Power put up 31 assists to add to WSU's offensive performance. Weber State had six service aces and Rylin Roberts rocked three of them.
Digging it: There were two Wildcats with double digit digs. Helena Khouri led the night with 14 and Katelyn Erwin had 10. In total, WSU had 41 digs.
Blocking it: Schiess dominated the net with eight block assists. Megan Gneiting was not far behind as she had seven block assists.
GAME 2:
How it happened: Weber State and Missouri State started the match off neck and neck. The first set was tied early with a 9-9. The Bears went on a 6-0 run capturing the momentum of the first set. Later in the set, Weber State went on a 7-1 run to bring the score within two points. The Bears pulled it off and claimed the first set 25-22.
In the second set, the two teams started off close yet again. Weber State put together a 6-1 run thanks to three big blocks and a kill from both Roberts and DeYoung to take a 16-9 lead. WSU never let up after that and finished the set with three consecutive points for a 25-14 win.
WSU struggled in the fourth set falling behind 10-4 early. The Bears never gave an inch of wiggle room and took the third set 25-17.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the fourth set. The Bears brought the score within one point at a 16-15 score. Weber State persevered. Kennedy Williams came up with back-to-back kills to take Weber State to set point and a Bears service error gave WSU a 25-19 fourth set victory sending the match into a fifth set.
The momentum was all Weber State's in the fifth set. WSU jumped out to a 12-4 lead and then finished it out for a final score of 15-9.
For the first time this season, Weber State went into five sets and all the better, came out victorious.
Killing it: Roberts and Gneiting each had 10 kills against the Bears. DeYoung and Nay were close behind with eight each. Weber State ended the match with 51 kills from 142 attacks with 25 errors.
Power had 42 assists. Weber State had nine total assists with Williams having four.
Digging it: There were two Wildcats with double digit digs, Khouri led the way with 17 and Roberts was close behind with 15. In total, WSU had 60 digs.
Blocking it: Schiess continued her strength on the net with 10 total blocks. Gneiting had seven to add to the defensive efforts.
Doubling it: Roberts ended the Missouri State match with a double-double. She rocked 10 kills and 15 digs.
Notes to know: The Wildcats finished in first place at the MSU Fall Invitational with a perfect 3-0 record on the weekend, advancing them to 7-2 overall on the season. DeYoung, Schiess and Roberts were all named to the All-Tournament team while Roberts was named the tournament MVP.
Next Up: Weber State will take on in-state foe, Utah Valley in Orem, on Thursday before returning home to the Swenson Gym to host Utah State Sept. 21.
