OGDEN, UT – The Weber State women's soccer team opened Big Sky Conference play in an exciting double-overtime 1-1 draw against Sacramento State.
Â
The Wildcats played well in the first half and were able to control over half of possession. There were many instances where WSU strung seven or more passes together, and the amount of shots taken reflects that ball control. Weber State outshot Sacramento State 6 to 2 in the first half. However, in the 20th minute SAC's Julia Herrera slipped a ball past senior goalkeeper Nikki Pittman to make the game 1-0 for the Hornets. The first half ended 1-0 for Sacramento State.
Â
Weber State stepped up the intensity in the second half, especially in regards to shots. The Wildcats took 11 shots, three coming from center defender, Haley Thomas. Relief finally came for Weber State in the 87th minute, when Sacramento State's Aubrey Goodwill committed a foul in the box to give the Wildcats a penalty kick. Junior Jasmine Lotey took the pk, and calmly pinged it off the right side of the goal into the back of the net to tie the game. This was Lotey's first goal of her career, and gave Weber State a point to tie the game 1-1. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
Â
The Wildcats game themselves multiple opportunities to score in both overtime periods, however were unable to sneak one past Sacramento State's goalkeeper. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.Â
Â
"I was proud of the way the girls played tonight. They possessed and moved the ball well, and they created plenty of great scoring chances. We would have liked to get the win at home, but ending in a tie, especially when having to finish the match down a player, was not a bad result for us." said Interim Head Coach Meagan Thunell.
Â
The Wildcats (1-7-1) will take on Portland State this Sunday, September 29th at noon at Wildcat Soccer Field.Â
