Wildcats earn Big Sky win on rainy Sunday

OGDEN, UT – The Weber State women's soccer team picked up their first Big Sky Conference win against Portland State this afternoon. The Wildcats are now undefeated after the first weekend of conference play.
Â
The game, originally set to kickoff at noon, was delayed until 1:45 pm due to a waterlogged Wildcat Soccer Field. Because of the unplayable conditions, the game was moved to Spence Eccles Ogden Community Sports Complex in Ogden, UT.Â
Â
Weber State controlled most of the possession in the first half and gave themselves some great opportunities to score. In the 18th minute of play, sophomore Nixie Hernandez passed a ball through the Viking's defense to Taylor Scadlock, who slipped the ball to the right of Portland State's goalkeeper to give the Wildcat's the go-ahead goal. This was Scadlock's first goal of the 2019 season. The Wildcats finished out the first half ahead 1-0. Â
Â
"Scaddy (Scadlock) has played phenomenally in the past two games. She gave maximum effort until the final whistle today, and we needed that kind of energy. I was happy to see her get a goal." said Interim Head Coach, Meagan Thunell.
Â
The Vikings stepped up the pressure on the Wildcats in the second half, shooting the ball eight times forcing senior goalkeeper Nikki Pittman to make several saves. "We had a solid defensive effort today, and it was nice to get the win." said Thunell. Pittman proved unbreakable throughout the rest of the match, posting five saves for Weber State and earning her first shutout of the season. The game ended 1-0 for the Wildcats.
Â
"That was a well-deserved win today under less than ideal circumstances. There is no doubt that this team has a lot of heart, and it's exciting to watch them turn the corner and gain some momentum." said Thunell.
Â
The Weber State women's soccer team will head to Montana and Northern Colorado next Friday (October 4th) and Sunday (October 6th) respectively, to continue Big Sky Conference play.
