Weber State picks up three set sweep over LIU

9/6/2019 5:57:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball continued at the BYU Doterra Invitational with a three set win over LIU on Friday afternoon.

What head coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "LIU gave us some unique problems. I thought we got distracted at times and didn't play as consistent as I was hoping. Overall, we did enough to win that game."

How it happenedIn the first set, LIU strung together a 6-0 run early to take a 10-6 lead. A kill by Sam Schiess finally broke LIU's streak and put Weber State on track. WSU was able to tie it up at 16-16. The score remained close and eventually tied back up at 25-25. Hannah Hill-DeYoung came up with a service ace to help give WSU the 27-25 first set victory.

The Wildcats jumped out to an 18-10 lead in the second set. Weber State commanded the final points of play in the second set with big kill from Shiess and two from Dani Nay. Ashylyn Power had an ace to take Weber State to set point and a Shark service error gave WSU a 25-15 second set win.

Going into the third set, Weber State had a 2-0 advantage and carried that momentum into an early 12-3 lead. Weber State went on an 11-0 run that started with a kill by Schiess. Megan Gnieting served for 10 consecutive serves contributing to nine of the 11 unanswered points. LIU put a good effort in and brought the score within four. Weber State didn't let LIU gain too much ground and took it to match point in WSU's favor. WSU gave up three points at the end of the third set and the score sat at 24-21 when the Wildcats called a timeout.

Coming out of the timeout Hill-DeYoung laid down a kill to finish the set with a 25-21 win and a three set match sweep.

Killin' It: Weber State was led by Schiess who had 10 kills from 16 swings with no errors for a .625 hitting percentage. Rylin Roberts and Nay each added nine kills to WSU's efforts. In total, Weber State had 38 kills on the afternoon from 104 swings and 13 errors for a .240 hitting percentage.

Ashlyn Power put up 32 assists to add to WSU's offensive performance. Weber State also had five service aces on the match with Power and Hill-DeYoung each having two.

Diggin' the block party: Two Wildcats had double-digit digs against the Sharks. Both Helena Khouri and Gnieting had 13 digs. In total, Weber State had 49 digs.

Not only did Schiess have a very strong offensive performance she also dominated the defensive side with six block assists. Power had two solo blocks and three assists for five blocks. WSU came away with 11 total team blocks.
