Weber State falls short in three sets against BYU

9/7/2019 10:32:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball finished out the BYU Doterra Invitational with a three-set loss to tournament host and in-state rival BYU.

What head coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "I really hated our mental effort today. We are better than that and we need to play our style of volleyball regardless of who is on the other side of the net."

How it happened: BYU jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the first set. The Cougars maintained that lead but WSU didn't stop fighting. A Cougar service error sparked a 5-0 run for the Wildcats bringing the score within one point. The narrowest lead BYU had.  WSU trailed 22-21 with things heating up. Hannah Hill-DeYoung and Megan Gneiting had a big block to keep WSU within one point at the end of the set but BYU came up with back-to-back kills to take a 25-22 first set win.

In the second set, Weber State trailed 13-7 and never gained footing or momentum to make any dents in the score deficit. The Wildcats ended up falling 25-16 in the second set, giving BYU the 2-0 advantage going into the third set.

The two teams were close in score early in the third set but BYU quickly jumped out to a 10-5 lead and then later pushed it to 20-10. Weber State found some fire at that point and scored four consecutive points thanks to a BYU error, a Rylin Roberts ace, and two kills from Dani Nay. That 4-0 run then turned into an 11-2 run. Nay contributed two more kills and Gneiting had two kills and a block.  Weber State found themselves trailing 22-21 yet again at the end of the third set. BYU finished the set out however with a 25-22 win and a three-set sweep over WSU.

Killin' It: Weber State was led by Gneiting and Nay who each had eight kills. Nay had the match-high hitting percentage with her eight kills coming from 15 swings with only one error for a.467 percentage. The Wildcats ended the night 28 total kills from 102 swings with 17 errors.

Ashlyn Power put up 24 assists to add to WSU's offensive performance. Weber State also had five service aces on the match with Roberts having two.

Diggin' the block party: The digging defensive efforts were pretty evenly dispersed throughout the Wildcats with Power and Roberts leading the way with six apiece. Gneiting, Katelyn Erwin and Helena Khouri each adding five. WSU had 36 total digs on the night.

Roberts also led the way at the net with four total blocks including one solo and three assists. WSU ended the night with seven total blocks.

Notes to know: Weber State is now 4-2 overall on the season.

Next Up: Weber State will hit the road and leave the state for the first time this season to the Missouri State tournament to take on Kansas State, SMU, and Missouri State. WSU's next home game will be Sept. 21 against Utah State.
