Lag in fourth quarter leads WSU to 65-54 loss to ISU

OGDEN – It all came down to the fourth quarter Thursday night in the Dee Events Center as Weber State women's basketball and Idaho State battled for a victory. ISU put up big numbers in the final 10 minutes to take a 65-54 victory over WSU. 

What Head Coach Velaida Harris said: "I'm proud of the fact that we're working hard, but we aren't working smart. Getting smarter is our next step. We just have to keep working. Start matching the physicality and keep progressing."

How it happened: Idaho State took a nine point lead early in the first quarter. WSU finished the quarter on a 9-4 run but ISU still had a 19-13 lead at the end of the quarter. 

WSU cut the score deficit to just five points in the second quarter and held the Bengals to just seven points. By the time the two teams left the court for half time, WSU tailed 26-21. 

Halfway through the third quarter, UIa Chamberlin sunk a three pointer to put the Wildcats trailing by just two points. The Wildcats trailed by five points with under a minute in the third quarter. Ciara James was put on the free throw line where she sunk both shots. An Idaho State turnover with five seconds left gave WSU the ball and Chamberlin sunk one from behind the arc as the quarter buzzer sounded. ISU and WSU were tied 44-44 going into the final 10 minutes. 

Idaho State charged in the fourth quarter and outscored WSU 21-10 to take the 65-54 victory. 

Leaders: WSU was led by Jadyn Matthews who had a new career high of 17 points going 7-8 from the field including one made three pointer. She also had the game high with six boards. Chamberlin recorded four assists. 

Comparison: Weber State shot 43 percent from the field, 25 percent from the three and 88 percent from the free throw line. WSU ended the game with 22 total rebounds. WSU had 28 points in the paint and 14 off of the bench. WSU also ended the night with 10 assists and 22 turnovers. 

Idaho State shot 48 percent from the field, 37 percent from the three point line and 64 percent from the line. The Bengals ended the night with 23 total rebounds.  ISU had 28 points in the paint and 13 off of the bench but capitalized on 20 points off of turnovers. Idaho State had 12 assists and 12 turnovers. 

Notes to know: Weber State is now 3-12 overall on the season and 1-5 in Big Sky Conference play. 

Up Next: Weber State will stay home to host Portland State Monday, Jan. 20 before hitting the road to Montana State and Montana.
