Weber State drops final road game of the season 88-63 to PSU

2/29/2020 6:18:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Weber State women's basketball took on Portland State Saturday afternoon in the final home game of the season and the Wildcats fell 88-63.

What head coach Velaida Harris said: "We are working harder and smarter these last few weeks. I'm proud of that. The younger kids are learning, growing and improving. It's been tough in terms of us having minimal bodies to use and not much experience, but it's about our process. We have to put 40 minutes together. The end of the second quarter hurt us. We played catch up the rest of the game. "

How it happened: Weber State was the first to get on the board thanks to a jumper by Daryn Hickok. WSU pushed on for an 8-3 lead. With 2:16 left in the first quarter, the game was tied 17-17. In those final two minutes of the quarter PSU went on a 9-2 run to take a 26-19 lead.

In the second quarter, Weber State trailed 35-28 with 3:39 left. PSU locked down WSU only allowing the Wildcats to score five points the remainder of the half. Weber State trailed 51-33 at the half.

Weber State's lull in the second quarter carried over into the second half. The Wildcats couldn't recover and ended up falling 88-63 for a final score.

Leaders: Weber State was led by Jadyn Matthews who had 17 points. Ula Chamberlin followed with 13 points while Daryn Hickok and Liz Graves each added 11.

Graves also had nine rebounds to lead WSU.

Comparison: Weber State shot 40 percent from the field, 47 percent from the three and 73 percent from the free throw line. WSU ended the game with 33 total rebounds, 11 assists and 15 turnovers.

Portland State shot 47 percent from the field, 48 percent from the three and 100 percent from the free throw line. The Vikings pulled down 35 total boards, had 12 turnovers and 25 assists.

Notes to know: Weber State is now 3-24 overall on the season and 1-17 in Big Sky Conference play.

Up Next: Weber State will return home to the Dee Events Center for the final home games of the season to host Idaho and Eastern Washington.
